can't fund journalism or academia, but a racist c-tier comic can nab a quarter billion to pull uninformed gibberish out of his ass in three hour chunks
nice
heartwarming
If you go by what Spotify pays musicians per stream, by my (very rough) reckoning, Rogan has to get slightly less than 1.8x10(11) listens to generate $250M in value.
So, every human being on earth (~8B) is apparently listening to Joe Rogan almost 22 times a day.
Yeah. Make it make sense.🤷♂️
I switched to Tidal a while ago and they are pretty good. My playlists ported over with only about twenty losses over 1000+ tracks so I'd say their catalogue is basically comparable.
Their music discovery algorithm is a bit weak, but not a huge dismerit for most users.
I mean… I shamefully use Spotify. I think if I were to drop it at this point, I would switch to YouTube Music so I can get ad-free YouTube but I don't know if all artists *have* their music on YTM the way they're on Spotify.
It is just an app that lets you play YouTube on your phone in the background. Ads only appear if you watch the video, and going ad-free is a one-time purchase and not too expensive.
I would withdraw my music from there ?? we seen that some been taken off TikTok and read from both sides who is to 'blame' ... Is there any figures on how much Taylor Swift and her record company make from Spotify ? for her imagine not so much an issue but up and comers ?
I'm pretty sure they pay artists cumulatively more than everybody else. It's just that per-play the numbers are completely biased by the low rates of the free tier (which doesn't exist on just about any other platform).
and, I am sorry, I see NO WAY his podcast is really generating $250M in actual real-world value. Not enough ears on earth, and ads are cheap.
Also: 'legit' outlets would have adopted/stolen the model.
'Somebody' just wants to push his message.
Media stopped being about Capitalism some time ago.🤷♂️
Also: I refuse to believe there are enough Matt Yglesias fans to generate $2-3M a year.
Seriously, has anyone ever actually *MET* a Matt Yglesias fan not named 'Klein' or 'McCardle'?
It's Bullshit. All of it. Farce. Shadow Audiences, all to give gravitas to the 'correct' opinions.

Out of curiosity, I looked up some numbers. The contract is for 3 years. He did 184 shows in 2023. He gets 11 million listeners per show. That comes out to about 6 billion listens for that $250 M. That's about 4 cents per listen.
There's also the back catalog.
So let's turn this question around... If there's so much money to be had with all the 'ears & eyes" out there... then why are so many media outlets failing?
It’s inspiring that you don’t actually need to work hard or be curious about anything. Just be at the right place at the right time, be stupid and say stupid things in a way that make enough people feel good about themselves and they’ll just give you a quarter billion dollars.
I ended my Spotify subscription last month. In my "exit interview" I told them their business model (e.g., this) risks their music service and that their silo traps listeners, and that none of that is good for us. So, bye.
I shifted music to Apple (support for "classical") and pods to Pocket Casts.
