All of my jobs have involved deeply angering politicians and giant companies and they truly don't understand how little they can hurt me. I used to write about science fiction on the internet as a woman.

The copyright maximalists try ad hominem attacks and it's just.. cute. I used to get death threats.

The mainstream copyright lobby never really internalized the fact that the people they’re up against are so terminally online as to basically be immune to this shit

Also I look forward to getting back from sabbatical and sitting down for a long zoom coffee to hear your summer recap

Yes... "coffee"... not the industrial strength solvent I'll need to do that

Nobody can tell you what goes *in* the coffee

LOLOLOLOL I was on Usenet in the 90s, they wouldn't last an hour in the asylum, etc etc.

It's honestly deeply funny that they think calling me a stooge will make me upset.

Laughter is the best medicine for dealing with another's misplaced anger. 😄

okay genuine question: how does get to do this as a job? it sounds spiteful, lovely, & restorative.
Avatar
No, I do not recommend either journalism or nonprofit activism work. Like it IS spiteful but also frustrating and requires keeping up to date on politicians and companies to a degree that is just depressing.
Avatar
entirely valid take thank you 🫡
Avatar
Nonprofit activism is a very efficient burnout and mental illness machine, though! It’s real good at those!
Avatar
TBH, less efficient at those things than media.
Avatar
There should be a civilian version of the purple heart for doing that.

I am glad you are here. As a refugee from that time I appreciate your position. You are not the only person I heard express that surviving in SF gives one a thick skin. Keep up the good work!:)
