I don't comment on major stories, especially those involving violence, for the first 48 hours. It's a rule I've set after 2 decades of being on the Internet. I'm making an exception for the Trump assassination attempt.

You don't need to have any reason to block someone other than it's what you want to do ... but if you ever want to feel justified in that action, one of my favorites is to see their blocked by to follower ratio.

Belated good morning to Bob Roll for dropping an F-bomb on (NBC) Peacock's coverage of the Tour de France today. In the Peacock replay of Stage 16 it was around time stamp 4:27:45. He apologizes and explains the situation about 70 seconds later.

Sounds like someone we shouldn't be electing to take an oath of office to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States" if he ... [checks notes] ... thinks the United states is not a real constitutional republic anymore. Might be hard to do the one if you think the other.
A fun fact about JD Vance is that he's openly backed purging anyone who disagrees with him from the government, comparing it to "de-Nazification," and illegally defying court orders to do so.

The full Bsky experience is watching a far left account post both "I'll never vote for the democrats, they're just the lesser evil" & "the Republicans are the new Nazi party and that's not hyperbole" without any apparent sense of cognitive dissonance

There was an even bigger difference in the comments received. All on Threads and all but one here were positive, constructive, or neutral (one person was just being a jerk, not a troll). Only 18% on X were positive or neutral. The rest were negative, many highly so.

Normalized responses -- the total number of likes and shares, divided by number of followers -- were highest here (yay!) and lowest on X.

Yesterday, I shared this same Canada Day thread on Bluesky, Threads, and X. Here's what I found. 🧵
“Canada is such a northern country, don’t we want a little global warming?” I often hear. In a nutshell, NO. We’re warming 2x faster than the rest of the world, driving extreme heat, flood, and sea level rise we are not prepared for. The wildfire season started in Feb this year. Feb! #canadaday

It's happening. I pieced and sewed the main body of the flag last night. My wife is going to work on an applique to finish the design today (which is all well and good because while I'm super pleased with my work last night ... it's quite apparent I'm not a seamster).
I'll make a flag, and it will be amazing, and it will incorporate some pride colors so the queer members of my extended family will know they have some straight allies, and it will be amazing, and my bigoted aunts and uncles and siblings won't know what to say about it because it will be amazing.

African American bicycle racer Marshall Walter "Major" Taylor (1878-1932) was the world’s first black sports superstar. He was world cycling champion in 1899, American sprint champion in 1900, and set numerous track cycling records. PBS now has a documentary on the life of Major Taylor. #BlackSky

The Supreme Court decided that there’s no better way to celebrate Independence Day than to say, “you know, a king doesn’t sound too bad.”

Why does NBC/Peacock take it as a challenge for themselves to make watching the Tour de France worse every year?

The service was fine but I was really disappointed from the lack of potatoes at the funeral this afternoon.

Why does my family insist on making family reunions themed? In other news, I get to practice subversive compliance.

My kid went to her first Pride. And then she got in a very bad wreck. If you subscribe to Pocket Observatory, you got a letter about the wreck on Sunday. Now I’ve written an update, of sorts. www.pocketobservatory.org/an-update-of...

This is interesting. If you follow me, and were trying to get some mutuals from the bad place over here, what feeds would you recommend to a new user to follow/subscribe to/moderate with? I'll add some below, but (full disclosure) I don't really have many that I use.
Today, we’re releasing starter packs — personalized invites that allow you to bring friends directly into your slice of Bluesky! 🚀 Update to version 1.87 of the app or refresh desktop to create a starter pack. (It may take a moment for version 1.87 to appear in the iOS App/Google Play stores.)

Even a half-assed google search would turn up news articles of teen football players actually dying from heat.

Anyone had a chance to read through this affidavit yet given by Ryan Fisher in Tim Ballard's case? I've skimmed it and now it is becoming clear why the Church tried to distance Elder Ballard from Tim so quickly. Would be interested in some corroboration of this. www.reddit.com/r/mormon/com...
Well this is a carefully worded statement that could 1) absolutely be true, but also 2) sidestep disclosure that Elder Ballard might have approved the release of or facilitated releasing tithing records to OUR. He didn't have to do it himself for this to still be bad. www.sltrib.com/religion/202...

I dug a trench and installed 40 feet of french drain today. Now all but 2 of my downspouts daylight to rainwater gardens, instead of ending up in my crawlspace to be pumped out by my sump pump. The sump also ends up in a rainwater garden, but I don't want to rely on electricity during a storm.

🧵on confession When missionaries interview someone to be baptized into the CoJCoLDS, they ask the person to explain repentance, and if they feel they have repented of past sins. They also ask if they have ever committed a "serious crime," and if they have ever "participated in an abortion." 1/

I remember someone saying in my home ward once when I was visiting from college (not BYU) that they wouldn't help pay for their grandchildren's education if it wasn't at BYU. I'm considering making the opposite threat to keep my kid from going to BYU.
She's a good kid, but paying for whatever fancy private university she's going to want to attend is going to be expensive.
