I also tie this to the conciergification of US culture. Blackness as Door Dash, constantly consumed, commodified, and expected to "serve" - Fury at the Black people who refuse to be consumed or to do what non-Black people want. We live in the non-Black imaginary as tokenized servants.

There's so many threats to History, to higher ed, to the project of the humanities in general. I would think that a one-million-subscriber newsletter authored by a historian deploying her own scholarly work and basically being a walking advocate for history education would be a welcome development

As a former lawyer now academic historian the Supreme Court’s understanding and abuse of history drives me absolutely up the wall. They should be ashamed of themselves but I don’t think that’s a feeling known to the majority on the Court. My hot take of the day.

Biden is too old. But he has surrounded himself with competent people and has had a conventional first term. Trump is authoritarian but inept. He has surrounded himself with people he hopes will make him more effective at authoritarianism. Neither is ideal. But these are not similar problems.

Politicians treat the Supreme Court the way they treat cops which is to say that they fund them, seem afraid of them, demand no accountability and allow them to act with complete impunity. Instead of disempowering them, it's some commissions, reports and shrugs.

Thanks for posting! I teach African American History to college students many of whom are surprised to learn about slavery in New York and other parts of the North. I love the idea of reviving the celebration of Pinkster. We should also commemorate the 1712 NYC Slave Rebellion too.

Saw her perform last summer at Blossom Music Center with the Cleveland Orchestra. She was amazing! She sang a song from Gypsy and talked about how her own experiences as a mother made her interested in and ready to take on this role.

There are many reasons to vote for Biden over Trump, and I agree with all of them tbh! But the whole “Biden’s version of genocide is better than Trump’s version of genocide” is absolutely repulsive. And again, assumes that there will still be people alive in Gaza in January 2025.

Totally get it! After I spent one semester teaching synchronously online on it-holy cow, the worst experience ever-I try to avoid saying its name or using it. Sadly my campus is an MS one so we’re stuck with all of it.
