Binary thinking is a hell of a drug, because people will look at Biden and Trump and say: they’re both old, both slipping mentally, both bad on Palestine, etc. And, sure, if you’re being that reductive, it’s true. But these are not binary categories! The degrees of difference matter!

After a week of fanfare from the NYT books desk to announce their top 100 books of the 21st century, and the only poetry to make the list is Rankine's Citizen. It deserves its place, but... all that hoopla to reveal that all their voters still read so narrowly.

This is such a Maine attitude that surprised me as an outsider when I first moved there... lotta cars with tons of conservative bumper stickers alongside ones like "hands off Mother Earth!!!" When people are hardcore into the outdoors, this shit matters

my read on this stuff about sandblasing national parks and other protected areas away isn't a huge issue for everyone, but the voters who care about it REALLY care about it and are distributed across the political spectrum, including a bunch of otherwise low-info or non-partisan swing voters.

I once copy edited a feel-good promotional booklet for a notable nonprofit that featured many giants of the 20th century and things I had to prove they did not say 😑

The number of writers who, apprised that the quote they found at BrainyQuote and want to use as an epigraph is a bit of refrigerator door wisdom that was not in fact written by Voltaire, Emerson, or Mrs. Parker, will still insist on using the quote, with the attribution, is far more than zero. 1/

Took my older kid to the pool today, and a pickup with two flags was parked outside. One had a picture of a Trump, and said “I’m voting for the convicted felon!”; the other is the vulgar one below. There were ~50 kids waiting to get in, all gawking at it. (1/2)

Today is why anyi-vaxxers suck: we couldn't get our 6 month old the covid vaccine because our pediatrician doesn't have any. The reason? No one was getting it so they were throwing boxes out.
