Not sure followed count is the right metric. My account on Twitter for mocking post rats got harassed around 200 followers and I never had more than 300 before I deleted it. The recent drama here is from the fact that black users on BlueSky are getting harassed off before even getting started...

Yeah YA is definitely a marketing strategy and I think more often than not it is another term for "urban fantasy"

I am also making jokes. No harm intended

I don't think anyone reads Lord of the Flies in middle school but if anything you read in high school is YA then we have Heart of Darkness, 1984, All Quiet on the Western Front, Sophie's Choice, The Color Purple...

So Catcher in the Rye is YA?

As ever, the desire for information and meaning always outpaces reality. The only thing that can fill that gap is speculation (ranging from idle brainfarts to bullshit to conspiracism). The 24 hour news media and analysis system is not a vehicle for rapid information, it is a vehicle for speculation
I keep telling y'all to not read news analysis of breaking events until at least 2-4 weeks have passed. A lot of it just doesn't stand up

People lately have suggested presenting research at conferences to me as a way to get library jobs

It’s still sad watching people descend into conspiracism for all of the mundane and personally traumatic reasons that it can happen to anybody

Have not measured it but based on our knowledge of gravity they predict they exist

The CERN supercollider creates black holes but they are so small they evaporate immediately and it is not going to create portals to alternate universes because if that were possible many higher energy astrophysical particle sources we study extensively would have already done so

I remember someone on Twitter with a pretty large following talking about what it was like to make a factual error in a Tweet. They said it was like being in high school if you made a mistake on a math problem and every student lined up to tell you one-by-one on the PA system.

Just found out there’s an actual library in town, with books and everything! They kept that quiet.

"Across social media, posts can fly up faster than most fact-checkers & moderators can handle, & they are often an unpredictable mix of true, fake, out of context & straight propaganda." If you're not sure a post is factual, don't share it ⤵️ #NewsLiteracy www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...
How to avoid falling for misinformation and conspiracy theorieswww.washingtonpost.com Breaking news moves fast online, and it can be difficult to tell what's real and what's purposefully misleading or fake. Here's how to sort through it all.

Yes! I don't even want anything fancy, just let me filter on different types. I find alerts that aren't a direct interaction (like, repost, quote) a complete waste of cognitive load.
Bluesky absolutely needs better notification filters. Co-signed.

Most problems are systemic. The structure of systems causes feedback loops that amplify. Usually the corrective actions are not systemic. Therein lies the problem
The problem with conspiracy theories is not that people have them or even that they can post them. The problem is an infosphere that systematically amplifies and sucks people into them, coupled with weakened trust in fact-based media and institutions, eroding a shared understanding of the truth.

This is a busy week for us so I can’t say anything about timeline, but we are going to prioritize notification filtering. Work has already started
