I can’t explain how fucked up it is that Threads created a more hostile atmosphere to the New York Times than we did. Tony the Tiger brand humping website just beat our asses.
Wow. @nytimes.com has closed their Threads account and left the platform after days of getting just shredded in the replies for their handling of Biden post debate. Now they're getting dog piled on Instagram for running from Threads.

It’s embarrassing tbh

I recognize that I benefit a lot from my community and relationships and so I have access to resources that others do not have but everyone has the ability to make change, and part of that is by recognizing the community that you do already have

Just wrote about a few specific ways to get involved and get yourself on the sunny side of that bus: www.jphilll.com/p/so-what-now.

Something I am struggling with: cruelty, in all its forms, appeals to a whole hell of a lot of people. There’s not much to the GOP apart from vulgar cruelty and still they’re viable basically everywhere. No hope, no message, no answers… just stepping on vulnerable people for the thrill of it.
Yep. Adam Serwer wrote a whole essay about this six years ago. The phenomenon is so hard to acknowledge that good people have to keep rediscovering it. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

This is super important work. And it looks like it's actually having an effect. Normal people learn about Project 2025 and are scared as shitless as they should be. The Nation, The New Republic, Rolling Stone, Boston Review and others are doing the work that NYT and WaPo are neglecting.
We need more, but credit where due: both The Nation (June 2024 issue) and Boston Review have run a breakdown of the Project 2025 “Mandate for Leadership” document. Media Matters, too. Lots of good work going on digesting this. www.bostonreview.net/articles/ins... www.mediamatters.org/project-2025

Primary funding for libraries does come from local taxes (property, income and/or sales), but in most places libraries also get some state funding which may include federal funding and grants.

So you can also make sure to lobby your federal congresscritters to support IMLS/LSTA funding. www.ala.org/advocacy/lib...

I loved our library growing up and we went there alot when we couldn't afford to buy books. Unfortunately both of our local libraries have now closed 😞

Congratulations! Libraries are magic. Keep up the good work. 🌞 (19 years ago we found ourselves in a community that voted to defund it's library system. 😥 Our family poured a massive amount of time/talent into getting it reopened first as a volunteer/donation run institution. )
Avatar
And then, in 2017, formed a library district which is now tax payer funded. 🌞 Since then, one branch has been rebuilt, one is currently being remodeled, and a parcel of land was secured for a new main library. 🌈

Our local network of libraries is doing a thing this summer where you can visit the different branches for a stamp on a passport to "earn" prizes. So, we have a 33 library challenge!

And, check to see if your library system has a partnership with a nearby library system so you can help two communities! My county library card gets me a card at the nearest city library system.
today is my NINETEEN YEAR anniversary working at my local library In honor of that, I ask you to get a card to your local public library today! If you ALREADY have a card to your local public library, check out their digital resources! Their summer programs! And yeah, they have books too.

ALSO ALSO any New York State resident can get a NYPL card! www.nypl.org/library-card

I'm at 19 years in public libraries, too! Started part-time in May 2005, full time somewhen between then and now. 2008? Who remembers. The drum I beat: Public libraries are for communities, not just families. That means it's there for *you*. Go! Physically, remotely, go!

I’m astounded at what our local library has to offer in terms of digital resources; free language courses, museum passes, technical training… it’s awesome
Avatar
And many libraries (such as mine) have maker spaces and non-book resources! Mine started up a seed library last year, and has a maker space with a glowforge and a sublimation printer and embroidery machine. You can even check out things like board games, a metal detector, or a sewing machine.

Appalled almost daily at the people who come to libraries only for a free Covid test kit *and DON’T FUCKING MASK.*
