You're right, alt is best editable, and I am working on tools to make writing it easier, this one is very much a stalled by brain cancer work in progress

The history of alt text goes back to 1993. The alt attribute was introduced for HTML 1.2 to be used for text-based browsers, which load faster by not loading most of the graphic content.
This was a big deal when bandwidth connections were super limited.
Just a heads up that putting a web address on the alt text just means someone using a screen reader is stuck listening to a web address being read out. Alt text is for image descriptions and is an accessibility tool 💜

So get it read to us without being able to do anything with that information.
