Seen on Amazon today, apparently the Time War can be Lost on your window feeder. @amalelmohtar.com @maxgladstone.bsky.social Though given I'm in the middle of England it would be very noteworthy to have either of these birds show up.

What I've realized is that I'm much more likely to have these issues when the narrative isn't great. When the book actually rules, I don't have the focus problems. I'm FINALLY getting around to @maxgladstone.bsky.social's Craft Sequence, and I'm absolutely tearing through them.

I left academia for many structural reasons (chief of which was the inability to have a research-primary job with any security in a place I could bear to live) - But the inciting incident was being offered a fiction publishing and an academic publishing contract at the same time. $$ vs nothing.
It also runs on the idea that academics do all of this for love: — love of the intellectual work — love of the academic “lifestyle” — love of the cultural capital it supposedly brings — love of teaching Because if you love it, they don’t have to pay you a living wage or respect your time.

As someone who studies government, I want to say as clearly as possible that Trump 2.0 will not be the disorganized shitshow that the first term was. They have a credible plan to govern in an explicitly authoritarian model.

So do you all remember the story I was going on and on about a month or two ago, the one with the art bullshit and the stunt-writing POVs? You can read it in Uncanny 58 (soon - May 7! - at uncannymagazine.com), along with a slew of truly awesome other stories, poems, & essays. Get ready.

Exactly — they’ll grasp at any alternate explanation, “indoctrination”, “social contagion”, anything to avoid realizing that the protesters are normal human beings having a normal human reaction, whereas the straw-graspers are demented, unlikeable freaks.
The funniest thing is when they’re like “first it was the George Floyd protest and now it’s this” to show that it’s a shadowy conspiracy of indoctrination instead of the incredibly basic normal human emotion we’ve had for a million years of “please do not murder people”

All of this. Also, besides positioning themselves in court, it's also generally beneficial to the people that own and run publishers if everyone (writers, their own employees, people in general) thinks books don't sell and make money: it lowers expectations in advances, marketing, salaries, jobs
I offered a little rebuttal to the viral article claiming "No one buys books" (and dove into some of the math and stats of book sales) countercraft.substack.com/p/yes-people...
Yes, People Do Buy Bookscountercraft.substack.com Despite viral claims, Americans buy over a billion books a year

In case you’re curious: John Lennon got it from the American Rifleman magazine, and they probably got it from Charles Schulz.
In “Peanuts,” the phrase “Happiness is a warm puppy” was first uttered on April 25, 1960, and went on to become one of the strip’s most quoted lines. Demonstrating the complexity of his characters, Charles Schulz had the fussbudget Lucy express the sentiment.

Tried this at the bad place, didn't get a big response, so: Whare are some really good, well-written fight scenes (in books, not movies)? (Manchurian Candidate and Infinite Jest, for starters)

either way the fact that an average medium-informed voter could conclude that it hardly matters who wins the next election because all major policy outcomes are fixed unless at least two specific justices die soon, and be at least half right, is a problem for democracy and the rule of law
