Just want to spare a thought for these folks and their loved ones, who came a long way to find work and stability only to die on the job.

Even if they had time to warn the workers on the bridge; to have them get in a vehicle, turn and leave, I don't think there would been enough time to get off the bridge safely.
Avatar
Based on the footage I've seen, I concur. Even if the had gotten warning as soon as the ship lost power, they would have had to jump in one vehicle, leaving everything, and put the pedal to the metal to have had a chance. From the first lost of power to impact was less than 3 minutes.
Avatar
Correction. They had about 3 minutes. Still not a lot of time.

Not with that size ship, no, but at least they were able to get a Mayday out that prevented further loss of life. I do wonder if the tugboat pilots might be cited for releasing the ship too soon and not ensuring the ship had sufficient power on its own.
Avatar
perhaps the policy going forward is that all ships over ____ size sail with a tugboat escort.
Avatar
When the tugboats released it the container ship did have sufficient power on its own, and it proceeded for more than two miles down the channel under its own power. I suspect you don't know how very far the terminal is from the bridge. It's not right there. The tugboats did nothing wrong.

I didn’t say the tugboats did anything wrong. I just know they are a part of the equation that will be examined. Thanks for your input!😀

Yeah I’m trying to learn more but this seems about as close to an unpreventable tragedy as there is. Unless you just, like, don’t allow ships near bridges
Avatar
Yeah, but not letting ships near bridges really isn't practical in many harbors, bays, and rivers. I'm looking at this pic of the FSK, and the "bumpers" around the central support pillars weren't very big. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co...
Avatar
I'm not sure if bumpers would have helped much for this--I think they're generally for sideswipes and bumps. A full container ship moving at speed is.. an insane amount of kinetic energy.
Avatar
Oh, I know it's like a skyscraper crashing in, and a ship like that needs about a mile to stop with an anchor and engine in reverse. But I'm still surprised at how small the actual abutments are & that there weren't "pre-bumpers" even though they might not have stopped a strike like that.
Avatar
There was about four minutes from the time the first mayday was called, enough for the traffic from both ends of the bridge to be stopped before the impact occurred.

I am sure that the GOP will find a way to blame this tragedy on immigration.

Hell they are already calling it a cyber attack.

It doesn't. It takes so little time to educate but there are those who still chose to operate off superstitious ways of thinking instead. It's the dark ages with iPhones.

Stonetoss made a comic doing exactly that THIS MORNING.

This entire situation is awful 😢

Amerikkka doesn't deserve to receive the hard work immigrants expend here. Amerikkka makes me sick.

The new bridge should be named/dedicated to their memory

An unfathomable tragedy for the victims and their families, who deserve our generosity.

Is the company going to do the correct thing, fly the families and put them up in a nice hotel for investigation. Bare minimum would be pay all expenses for transport and the funerals. Then claw back from operator of ship, because ownership of ships makes sbf look like girl scout cookie sales.

And then there’s Congressman Mike Collin’s & the chairman of Students for Trump who apparently find the bridge collapse highly amusing, cracking jokes, while 6 workers, who came here seeking a better life for their families, are presumed dead. Excuse me while my blood boils.

Rest in peace to these poor souls. Their jobs are way more dangerous and thanklessly impactful than cops, who'd get an obnoxiously bagpipe-laden send off, half the time for dying in the dumbest ways possible.

May perpetual light shine upon them

A tragedy. Those at the base of our economic pyramid are most exposed to these risks. We need to support them more.

Did they not have phones or radios? They were completely taken by surprise and not given a chance?
Avatar
They may have been using heavy equipment like jackhammers or those tamping machines and had on hearing protection, but they really should have had a protocol so at least one person was on alert for messages (unless somehow the bridge operators didn't know they were there?)
Avatar
Christ. I get that hindsight is 20/20, and this was not a usual or expected situation, but there really should be a way to give enough warning to prepare. And I really hope this isn't a case of valuing workers so poorly that it didn't even occur to someone to warn them.
Avatar
I think I read that the whole thing took place in something like 3 minutes, so there really may have been no time. I hope that's the case, anyway.
Avatar
If you watch the footage, from the time the ship lost power (first issue of a Mayday) to impact was less than 3 minutes. So no, there was not time to find who to call to to warn them. Horrible all the way around.

Before you know it, the RWNJs will be blaming them for the collapse. So sad.
