It feels like we live in a time where pretty much all the software we interact with reached its peak at some point in the past and nothing is being improved, and we're all just hoping not to lose the things we now depend on and have given up hope on anything being improved.

In 1994 the Pet Shop Boys were invited to perform 'Go West' at the Brit Awards. They agreed and brought with them 3 separate choirs of miners. Some of those miners had marched with the gay and lesbian members of LGSM in the 1980s. It is one of the great, near-lost music moments vimeo.com/293437684

I spent an inordinate length of time trying to get read/write access to files across our private LAN. Everything on the host side was set read/write, and I was able to get read access, but write just wasn't happening.

I've told this story before, but when my paternal grandmother passed, her daughters fought for DAYS over who would get her precious ever-guarded recipe book, finally agreed they would share it, opened it to copy down the recipes and found it had only 1 entry which said "Book I pretend has recipes"
Tell me something funny about someone important to you who’s passed on. Anecdote, factoid, excellent one-liner—dealer’s choice.

Just got a news alert saying Joann Fabrics is going into bankruptcy due to decreasing demand. Article fails to say that it was purchased by a private equity firm a while ago and recently went public and is carrying $2.4 billion in debt. Private equity strikes again.

"Ignorance", written by Kasey Chambers in 2001, released on "Barricades & Brickwalls" by Lori Mckenna in 2005. Listen to it, dag nabbit. I've got something to say And I thought it might be worth a mention If you're not pissed off at the world Then you're just not paying attention

I recently made a comic complaining that NASA refuses to listen to my good ideas for improving the Solar System (xkcd.com/2750). To my delight, NASA’s Science Mission Directorate has sent me an actual expert panel evaluation of my “flatten the planets” proposal! Sadly, they decided not to fund it.

'Merry' wears a special grammatical holiday sweater in the song “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen,” since 'merry' describes “rest” and not “gentlemen.” It really means “may you gentlemen rest happily,” and not “may you happy gentlemen now rest.” www.merriam-webster.com/wordplay/arc...

Counties in states that expanded Medicaid under the ACA saw a 25% decrease in drug arrests, a 19% drop in “violent offense” arrests, and a 24% decrease in “low-level” offense arrests (Simes & Jahn 2022). Expanding public benefits leads to lower crime rates!
