Half of my family wound up in the States because of some trouble with the black and tans, if family lore is accurate. Derry Girls had a lot of There But For feelings.
Grew up in the UK. IRA guy who’d done a firebombing was arrested at mum’s workplace. Had UK based Irish friends questioned on ferries going back & forth. I forget sometimes how much it was part of my life & I was waaay on the outskirts. Derry Girls brought it back. But reminded me I was peripheral.
And I’d forgotten until I started writing this that I got texts making sure I was ok as a Real IRA bomb went off near my house in London in 2000. (It was absolutely fine, not that near my house.) Even though that was after the Good Friday Agreement, I am still so thankful for the GFA.
