PrEP is one of the great miracles in the history of medicine and moving it to a twice a year shot will make it so much easier for people to use it's hard to articulate just how amazing it is that we moved HIV from a guaranteed death sentence to something people no longer have to experience at all

TWICE A YEAR FOR 100% PREVENTION? HOLY FUCKING SHIT THAT'S CRAZY

Probably not actually 100% once it's at a wider scale. Still looks very promising tho.
Avatar
well certainly, but still definitely promising!

It looks like it's also being tested as a subcutaneous injection instead of intermuscular so it's potentially doable yourself.
Avatar
both are doable by oneself. there is no fundamental difference between an IM injection vs subq
Avatar
I'm happy this injection is successful, but unfortunately it's unlikely to address the biggest hurdles with getting PrEP to the people who need it the most. The main hurdles at this point are political, not pharmaceutical (or even logistical)

Don't even get me STARTED about Michael Weinstein

Soothly, we live in mighty fucking years.

A guy I played baseball with died from AIDS, and it was not that long ago. Yet you hear/read all those science-doubter anti-vaccine a-holes every friggin' day
Avatar
Its because they equate illness with badness. They want people to die. I remember students refusing to wear AIDS ribbons in highschool because “they brought it upon themselves” and I doubt some of them grew out of it.
Avatar
Imagine if straight men ran the risk of dying if they had sex? HIV and AIDS would have been wiped out decades ago. It would have been THE single priority for the entire world. ‘Soz, Brad, you had sex on prom, you brought it on yourself’ 🙄
Avatar
I work in biopharma and…I don’t know? Maybe we would have gotten started sooner but, straight men not getting it was more of a stroke of luck than anything. Much like with Covid, our understanding of HIV didn’t happen till we had it. And in biopharm terms we moved incredibly fast
Avatar
It’s a very weird dichotomy. We can’t work on something till it’s a problem. I thibk where we have to get is society as a whole seeing disease as a problem to be solved. I’ve also met ppl who think we shouldnt work on lung cancer or obesity. Sometimes folks are just asshats
Avatar
(Sorry, its early for me and i’m rambly!)
Avatar
And unfortunately, most of this stuff is investor driven. Investors are just hype-chasing the next problem that shows up at the expense of sustaining investments for known and sometimes largely prevalent issues (e.g.psoroasis). Not to say that new problems aren't important, both are
Avatar
They DID run the risk, they were not the most affected group though. AIDS didn't ask about your gender or love interests. You could even get it from a blood transfusion, drug adicts got it sharing syringes,...also using condoms to reduce risk of pregnancy helped heteros.
Avatar
Yeah but like, i remember when some (famous) straight men got it society was surprised? I think we knew this scientifically, but not as a society.
Avatar
Society at large didn't care until Magic Johnson was diagnosed.
Avatar
Thank you. Am I speaking in tongues?! I don’t think what I’m saying is wrong. We know the science and the risks. Many people still don’t. And definitely not back then. Feel like I’m purposely being misunderstood…but hey, that’s SM for you 🤷‍♀️
Avatar
More like most turned a blind eye or decided to believe their faith more than the facts, thus the "punishment for their sins" mentality. I have to admit here in Spain the government run a great campaign with ads on tv, radio,... one that is still remembered decades later and didn't discriminate.
Avatar
Yes I know all that. But the stigma is generally associated with gay sex. If it was predominantly a disease that affected straight sex I don’t believe there would be as much stigma. And I think more would have been done sooner. Something that stops straight men having sex? They’d be on it ASAP.
Avatar
Thats just it. Im not sure. I think unaffected people would just lie. Like, we still don’t try to cure baldness and viagra was a side effect🤷🏻‍♀️ Humans are very good at othering.
Avatar
Uh, my dude, let me tell you of this place we call "Africa"
Avatar
Yes, I’ve heard of it before. What’s your point?
Avatar
HIV is not just common in parts of Africa, but generational, it *is* a huge risk for straight men, their response is to blame women.
Avatar
Do you remember Zika and how everyone flipped the fuck out about it because it was affecting straight people and babies?
Avatar
Yup. And white people and babies.
Avatar
And we're getting pretty close to a cure, too
Avatar
Yup. I’m old enough to remember when it was a horrific death sentence.
Avatar
I was in high school when the first protease inhibitors came out and I remember how much of a miracle they seemed after AZT or nothing
Avatar
I’m old enough to remember when it was called GRIDS — Gay-Related Immune Deficiency Syndrome
Avatar
Agreed. Though we let an almost an entire generation of gay men die before we decided to try to do something about it, which is a fucking crime against humanity.
Avatar
so many good, beautiful people lost💔
Avatar
I can’t think about it without crying. It could have been me, and there are so many people I could have been friends with who are no longer here, because nobody in power cared.
Avatar
Graduated high school in 88. Lost the first of many friends 6 months after graduation. He found out he was positive and passed within 2 months. Those were such horrific times for my gay friends. The homophobia was deadly back then.
Avatar
I remember when triple antiviral therapy moved it from a death sentence to a chronic care disease and **that** was a miracle of science. This is health care magic.
Avatar
I’m old enough to remember Magic Johnson announcing he had HIV and back then, we never heard someone say that until they were already sick—we all assumed he’d be gone in a year. What I’m saying is, yay science.
Avatar
Immunity from immunodeficiency is the next level.
Avatar
oh hell yeah. happy to check my phone and see something so positive for once
