People say scientists are serious but marine biologists will spend hours quietly sitting around tables drawing on styrofoam cups and then tying said cups to deep sea submarines Because ocean pressure will squeeze the air from the cups And we are but human & we want tiny cup

And typing that made me think of a great example: a lot of people mocked old-Twitter's "most people don't post responses like this, are you sure?" interstitial when they implemented it as a stupid and ineffective intervention that they "wasted time on" instead of doing other stuff.

Automation and AI are freeing us from mundane, tiresome tasks like making sure you’re not advertising your products with quotes from David Irving
My sister does calligraphy so is big into fountain pens, and she sent me this. Looks like this company used an agency that lazily automated quotes from British authors — one of whom happened to be a Holocaust denier.

I feel like so much of the difficulty a lot of white people seem to have grokking this (some good faith ignorance, some not) is in failing to understand that white people vote primarily as a racial bloc, it’s not just Those Other People Trump hyperactivated that but it was active before him
More white women voted for Trump than Clinton in 2016. More white women voted for Trump than Biden in 2020. More white women will vote for Trump than Biden in 2024. Same for young white voters. More voted for Trump in 2016, 2020, and will in 2024. You can't be surprised by this every time.

I made particularly stupid slides for a talk I did in November and found that putting the Keynote clipart underpants (?) on the Keynote clipart stick figure also made it look more naked.
I ordered 'sexy' underwear off the internet for a Gay Thing this weekend and they are somehow more obscene than just being naked

#HugOps to everyone who's waking up and having to deal with this today. It's such a nightmare and those of us not having to sort it are so appreciative of the work you're all doing to get literally everything going again

There was so much chaos it’s hard to remember it all, but the timeline here lays it bare. Charlottesville was just six months into his term, THAT is how quickly white supremacists felt empowered by his presidency.

I think some of us have been taught that hiding from news is a cop-out. But it is no longer news, and I think this is important praxis for many of us at this point
There is something you can do. Right now, the media is aiming to keep us in a state of alarm. For ratings. The polls have not measurably moved. You already know your vote. Unplug and let the media giants squawk in an empty room. Maybe if they lost their ratings, they might actually do news again.

now people will be saying a bunch of conspiracy theories but: it isn't malware, it isn't a hack, it isn't ransomware, it is literally just.... incalculably stupid human error on behalf of so many people lmao, that's all it is. I feel bad for the hospitals right now, the most

Update on root cause speculation. Ignore a bunch of above, should have read the published notes more carefully. Culprit is a .sys file in the Windows Drivers directory, so definitely not a threat update. I assumed it must have been something in the real time feed because every one got hit a once

The most significant impact in New Zealand of the #Crowdstrike #outage seems to be St John whose ambulance communication centres have reverted to VHF radios for dispatch and writing paper notes according to Radio NZ www.rnz.co.nz/news/busines...
Live: IT outages reported worldwide for banks, stores, airports, mediawww.rnz.co.nz The company's chief executive says it is "actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update".

Hello, security engineer that has installed CrowdStrike on thousands of computers. A thread on the outage and what is exactly happening. Here’s a quick explainer on what *seems* to be the cause of the CrowdStrike outage and why it happened so quickly.

This is part of why we started up @darktimesacademy.bsky.social. So there would be a place to teach about unions and labour while also teaching about the very important concerns around AI. This stuff is so important.
Why don’t folks argue that we should be teaching students about unions and labor with the same intensity as the arguments for preparing students to use AI in professional contexts? Calls for AI’s “inevitability” obscure the ways labor can shape and contest policies and uses of technologies.

RNZ asked me an hour ago if I would comment, I said I didn't really know what was happening and would defer to a more qualified expert. I didn't realise that no one else really knew what was happening either. "We might come back to you, so far everyone is either not picking up or not sober."

this was a problem during his first campaign and term and it has gotten so much worse! stop hiding this shit from people!
It really is jarring to read an actual, verbatim transcript of his words, and I think it's honestly incredibly unethical of them to clean up with words before publishing them.
