For those freaking out about Project 2025 now and how the word pornography will be weaponised to silence and imprison people, spare half a thought for the sex workers who have been ringing the alarm bell on this for decades.

Fyi to journalists: Hillbilly Elegy is not about the brave nobility of rural poor/working class people. It’s deeply insulting to rural poor people - presenting them as lazy addicts who rely on welfare instead of working. The book is about how amazing Vance was to escape that backwards culture.

New in PN: The phony populism of JD Vance "Like his Republican brethren, and like Trump, his populism is paper thin; he views the working class with contempt and embraces policies that would entrench poverty and gut social mobility."

Florida may not be winnable, but the realistic chance that the abortion rights measure could get 60% means it's a once-in-a-generation chance to gain seats and power across the state.
if you’re dooming about sparse polls of states you’re pretty sure are going to go for Biden you might want to check Florida polls, which over the last month looks pretty close

I know they're still photos so probably not the full picture but the grimaces Trump is making at the RNC are those of a man whose life is ruined forever

Political scientists call this agenda setting. When the SCOTUS public approval rating is at a historical low, the Prez should talk about it in the election--loudly. Let people know you heard their anger. Even if Biden fails, put the GOP on record with votes against Court reform. tinyurl.com/yc7h7xsr
Breaking news: President Biden is finalizing plans to endorse major changes to the Supreme Court in the coming weeks, including proposals for legislation to establish term limits for the justices and an enforceable ethics code, according to two people briefed on the plans.

As someone not from New York City, I do find it odd that the Mayor routinely describes it as a hellhole that can't even keep its residents alive, much less provide basic services, and reaffirms his commitment to keeping it that way. Seems a suboptimal choice for a Mayor.
Mayor Eric Adams, asked by a reporter about the lack of air conditioning at migrant shelters during a heat wave, says, "Every day New Yorkers don't have air conditioners. We make do." He recommends paper fans and says his mom told him to put his head in the refrigerator. —Emma G. Fitzsimmons, NYT

trying to think of why it's so easy to spot chatGPT writing even when it's not making stuff up. like it can write in different tones and styles to a degree, but there's still kind of an "overconfident nerd" je ne sais quois to it all

Some students don't understand how we (their professors) can tell. I've found success by showing them images like these and saying, "See how it's obvious these images are ai-generated? That's how obvious it is with ai-generated writing most of the time."

people get mad if you point this out but Jon Stewart was always like this: it's just that his brand of "can't we just use common sense instead of being liars and hypocrites" moderate populism was the most left thing that was allowed in mass media post 9/11
apparently Jon Stewart figures Bill O'Reilly is what passes for a Reasonable People Can Disagree* republican and is happy to help him sell books *as long as we don't talk about grotesque sexual harassment and toxic workplace abuse

As I noted in yesterday’s CAMPAIGN TRAILS, Project 2025 is the key to this election: kevinmkruse.substack.com/p/convention...
On Chris Hayes podcast with Jamelle Bouie they talked about a possible reason for optimism: Project 2025 seems to have deeply penetrated TikTok. Anecdotally, my 15 yr old mentioned to me all the counselors she works with at camp have been talking about it and what rights they’re worried about losing

This is what AOC and Bernie get for sticking by Biden, and we can debate the policy, but this is a super-tangible win for the left side of the Democratic Party

Never forget that the worst thing you can do in a dangerous situation is to panic. Calm yourself and focus that nervous energy into action that will get you out of danger.

As we told the court, users are far better off when publishers make editorial decisions free from government mandates. Laws that allow the government to grant favored speakers special access to the platforms, and silence disfavored speakers are inconsistent with the constitution.

The Supreme Court’s ruling is a big win for users and the First Amendment. It recognizes that the government has a very limited role in dictating what social media platforms must and must not publish.

Also, you normalize death threats against judges, prosecutors, and staffers that are not fascist, so that a lot of non-fascists retire, drop out, or change the way they rule out of fear.

Two months ago Greg Abbott pardoned a murderer who texted a friend "I might go to Dallas to shoot looters" then drove into a BLM protest in Austin and killed a protester. The universal response from conservatives to the pardon was "Yeah! Woo-hoo!" Now they say liberals should turn down the rhetoric

Reminder for no particular reason that no one knows how this election will turn out, no one can foresee how an event today will impact voters’ choices four months from now, and it is still incumbent on all of us to fight fascism and not acquiesce to doom.

Not particularly looking forward to the Right’s half-smirking half-mock-weepy “look what you forced us to do” routine coming up.
