I just wish people would have the balls to customize the looks of their car. I see someone driving a link Hello Kitty car once in a while. Why don’t I see more of that?
As much as Americans like to pretend we’re all very unique and individualistic and all that - we’re incredibly conformist and financial concerns keep us so. Both on political matters and things like this.
Avatar
I don’t live in the States, but good to know there is a social and political reason. I guess we have all just been raised to not stand out.
Avatar
American here! In schools we wear uniforms, follow the same codes & guidelines, all held to the same standards, and are taught like robots. We dont learn based on our interests or talents, we only learn one universal curriculum that's decided on by politicians, not educators.
Avatar
That one’s pretty sad, to be honest
Avatar
As much as Americans treat vehicle choice as a substitute for personality, you'd think we'd be a little less grayscale

Many dont like to stand out, standing out has typically resulted in bullying folks into conformity. Case in point, look st the "trans issue"

We overdid that in the 1960s/1970s hippie-van era. During the late-90s-early-00s, the SF Bay Area had a lot of art cars from the Burning Man crowd. My Kia Soul had the option of coming with hamster footprints, but those cost a lot extra.
Avatar
Right, I forgot, colors and personality are illegal in 2024, hence why all logos and brands have also toned down and become much more lifeless and generic.
Avatar
lol Oakland has even more recently a mayor with a snail car don’t remind me

I remember a USAID official in Delhi driving a bright pink Ambassador car, then the favoured car of Indian politicians accompanied by security convoys. She was recognised and commented upon everywhere. 😄

Cops. They love to pull over a unique looking car. You can look forward to a ton more tickets if your car looks unique.
In Germany it is very hard to change the outside of your car. Everything needs to be TÜV-approved...

the people with imagination usually don't have the money

I can attest to that. I’m a novelist and deeply in debt.
Avatar
may you reach enough success to design and have your own car

I’d rather have a trip to Japan, but thanks.

I think it comes down to safety a lot.

Why are we not talking about how fucked up it is for a pig to drive a hotdog car

Good point! Though Scarry had form on this: “Animal cannibalism in the beloved works of Richard Scarry” davegilson.com/scarry.html

"This Little Piggy" reminds me of a Chas. Addams comic. Of course, most of life reminds me of Chas. Addams comics.

It's an all-beef hotdog, of course!

They tried apple car, more or less, the rest are just old aerodynamic roadsters Regardless, wouldn't trust them to pass crash safety standards nowadays
Avatar
One educational thing about the cybertruck is that it’s revealed the US doesn’t really have crash safety standards. Nothing is keeping Americans from driving pickle cars!
Avatar
It's because of its weight and the fact its classed as a truck, us safety standards for trucks are lower so, theoretically, they can be sold cheaper. However, thats the loophole that lead to the luxury suv boom, theyre cheaper to make and thus make more profit overall
Avatar
Us crash safety standards for sedans is honestly pretty alright
Avatar
But, but… my joke!
Avatar
Oooh I had that book 🤩
Avatar
apple car wouldn’t accidentally run over children hidden by the 2m bumpers of american streettanks

That was a landmark for me as a kid -- it sat at the corner of Mercer and Fairview just off the exit we took off I-5 to get home. Good times.
