This is the sort of policy that, for all its obvious faults, would work particularly poorly in New York City. Like, even if you thought the balance of interests ended up tilted toward mask ban in the abstract, in NYC more than anywhere else in America it would not.

Basically any attempt to imagine New York City as anything other than a place where white collar suburbanites work and a bunch of undesirables live is DOA.

I'm pretty sure I saw Asian Americans wearing masks in NYC in 2019; I don't think it was out of any inkling of Covid's approach so much as having a different attitude about hygiene and spreading germs. I still see masks in Chinatown. I don't see how anyone can ask anyone to deliberately unmask.

Why should they. I will wear a mask where I am around strangers during flu season. It is a cheap precaution.

We agree. Hochul's argument is that banning masks makes crimes easier to solve.

And the 99.9% that are not committing crimes are made to suffer. When are our elected officials going to go with the majority?

I hate to have to tell you this, but Eric Adams was nominated for mayor by NYC Democrats - - not in a winner-take-all or two person -runoff scenario, but by using rank choice voting. And he led at EVERY STAGE. NYC was given a choice (and blew it all by itself). The press focus on crime helped a lot.
