My colleagues & I have studied the social media aftermath of mass shooting events for a decade. We’re still processing the horrifying, abhorrent, and tragic event yesterday, which appears to be an assassination attempt on former President Trump. In case they're useful, here are some first thoughts:

The "Eskimo Curlew" (Numenius borealis) at one time migrated in large numbers from what is today Alaska south partly over the Atlantic as far as what is today Argentina, and then back north up the Mississippi Valley (and through Kansas). Like the passenger pigeon, we killed all of them.
We should hear more about the wild curlew's shrill scream in songs.

Breaking News: Oklahoma’s Supreme Court ended a lawsuit seeking accountability on behalf of the last two known survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The women, who are now 109 and 110, argued that the massacre amounted to an ongoing public nuisance, and they sought reparations.
