I knew flight attendants get screwed with pay per “flight hour” but I really did not know just how little they take home. These are below poverty wages for what is a stressful, full time job
American Airlines Flight Attendants Can't Afford Food, Shelterjalopnik.com Flight attendants earn just $27,315 a year, and are ready to strike about it

genuinely fucked up. they should be paid way more than cops.

Literally every job should be paid more than cops

with ridiculous working conditions too, flying is way riskier for them than for passengers
Avatar
yes, and the passengers are way riskier for them than the flying

immediately as well as long term health

A friend was serving drinks when they hit turbulence. She got a head injury & had a stroke while they were landing. They told her they had decided her stroke was a pre-existing condition& they didn't HAVE to pay for her care, but they would if she settled immediately as a generosity for her service 🙃
Avatar
They ate her up & dumped her immediately. For an unlivable wage. Madness.

horrible, fuck that

Crash pads have always existed for flight attendants and pilots. For pilots it’s historically because they chose to live further from their base airport, but for flight attendants it has almost always been about pay.
Avatar
Flight attendants have always been horribly underpaid.
Avatar
This is awful. My friend who’s a flight attendant for a different airline told me they don’t get paid until the plane’s engine is on. So, during all the safety checks and getting passengers settled in, it’s all non-billable time/free labor. I had no idea until she told me!
Avatar
Avatar
I think it’s the same for pilots. 😔
Avatar
They are paid by the flight not by the hour. So they are motivated to make sure the flight leaves and leaves on time.
Avatar
I hope to see changes at some point. I want the people who do as much as they can to ensure we don’t fucking crash before takeoff to get paid. Also, flight passengers are notoriously assholes so that alone deserves something.
Avatar
Also I really like not dying in a fire and then continuing the hot streak by not having to eat people or be eaten. To me not doing these things is basically my favorite activity

Avatar
No they're paid wheels up to wheels down
Avatar
Doors closed to doors open.
Avatar
That's so fucked
Avatar
And the airlines make them live in major cities where the hubs are. It’s impossible

Yeah 75-80% of your income being rent a month ahead, is a great way to be functionally poor even if your salary is good, and they wonder why no one wants to come back to the office
Avatar
good god I made more than that at my first entry level job during the Great Recession 15 years ago
Avatar
I just came from a flight a few weeks ago where going and coming, had screaming babies on it. The flight attendants were so distant and rude with passengers in general, I didn't know why. This would make a lot of sense (+ the children on a 13 hour flight)
That’s absolutely nuts. People’s lives are in their hands. Ashamed I didn’t know this. They should walk at sunset.
Avatar
The amount of positions in the economy that are despite the importance of their role mercilessly routinely fucked over... Revolt is way overdue.
Avatar
It's such a shitty job....in a metal tube you can't leave
Avatar
I always assumed they were unionized - can’t imagine a union would tolerate these conditions.
Avatar
This is what I don’t understand, why doesn’t the union demand a better wage? What are the big upsides that make people want to take these jobs at the pay level they’re at?
Avatar
Suddenly remembering the video of the flight attendant who had a meltdown

Airline pilot is literally the worst job I ever had.

Flight attendants from USA, I suppose.

Flights attendants are horribly underpaid and always have been.

Tipping should definitely be a legal thing in that field. I can't imagine a worse service industry job.
