Why’s that, Francis? Did something happen?

Comparing the reactions to the assassination attempt on Donald Trump to the assassination attempt on Paul Pelosi. Some of the most po-faced Republicans now are still gleeful about Pelosi being beaten half to death with a hammer.

How do we robustly campaign against perceived threats to democracy in a world where someone else might choose to pick up a gun? This is not a morally or practically simple question.

Just bc someone is a registered Republican doesn’t mean they’re a groyper, and anyone telling you the shooter is a groyper either has secret knowledge or is lying. Please stop DMing me about this. I beg you. No reason to associate him with Nick Fuentes at this time.

Genuinely too early to know the shooter's motivation. Left, neo-Nazi, Boogaloo, secret ISIS member, obsessed antivaxxer or just plain crazy. And that's not an exhaustive list. There are lots of different tendencies who'd want to kill Trump.

I can already feel that the Tory leadership race is gonna give me an ulcer, because of the number of people on the centre and left who have neither read a history book nor the news saying things like “hopefully the Tory party will move to the right”.

The "Raw milk is good actually" conspiracy theory meets the Great Replacement in this one I that's spreading on the far right: "The Jews invented Pasteurization as a plot to destroy Aryan immune systems and encourage lactose-intolerant races to move to northern Europe"

I will be so incredibly angry if a shoddy Tesla flying car lands on my head while I’m walking into a grocery store
Also, two relevant points: 1) Musk has started telling people that maybe the Tesla Roadster (coming next year since 2017) will be able to fly. 2) Tesla's current cars officially have a lifespan of under 120,000 miles, the owner should expect to replace basically everything after that point.

Anyone aware of a homophobic slur that sounds a bit like "apadeckies"? Probably US usage? I'm trying to decipher something, not just looking to expand my slur vocabulary

NEW YORK (AP) — Walgreens says a quarter of US stores are underperforming and it plans to shutter a significant number within 3 years.

The original 1987 ad was clever: a bit of wordplay, a shocking image, and tapped into fears about Labour's foreign and weapons policies during the late Cold War. Today's new ad from the Tories is just aimless derivative fearmongering about nothing in particular.

Hey, survey researchers? Don't do this. Headline in my inbox this morning: "23% of U.S. adults now use AI language models like ChatGPT – the tipping point." Actual survey question (which I had to click a link and read 17 pages deep to find): "Have you ever used an AI language model or a chatbot."

Speaking as someone with a PhD, I find the idea that anyone would be impressed by the idea of "PhD level intelligence" absolutely hysterical.

I have to pronounce Alcester as it's written else people think I mean Ulster.

I would say "shuh" rather than "sheer" but regardless, this is a relic of the Great Vowel Shift. Pre-shift, the word "shire" used to be pronounced "shur/sheer", but when the words changed, the names didn't. (Which is why Berkshire is pronounced "Barkshuh" but is a "shire" county).
"Shire" on its own rhymes with wire and sire. But 'shire' in a place name is always pronounced "sheer" and means one of the old counties. It's not York-shire, it's Yorksheer. So Gloucestershire is Glosster-sheer, not Glau-sester-Shyre.

Oh my god, this is fucking huge. It was huge when we developed a daily PrEP pill that could prevent you from catching HIV; this is a successful phase III trial of a PrEP shot that will only need to be given *twice a year*. Still needs a confirmatory Phase III, but holy fuck.

I think the bottom line when trying to explain English pronunciations to anyone at all is "Whatever you try will probably be wrong for the locals, but if you try it how the local say it, that'll be wrong for another set of locals".

Great list! Here’s another one for the list. I grew up in Bournemouth. Bournemouth = Bornmff And went to uni in Portsmouth. Portsmouth = Portsmff (or Pompey = Pompee) So confusing. 😅
