Nothing is more obvious to those of us that *do* than others who are only here to feed their own desire to signal and find others who agree with them unflinchingly - while paying no costs, considering no action. Thankfully, such people have a way of weeding themselves out.
Wishing I could live a life as comfortable as those who consider any mention of the material interests of others as “cynical” or who screech about “rhetoric” and “normalizing” while decrying anything grounded as being insufficiently extreme, and therefore failing their litmus test.

The omniscient being who took over Philip K. Dick’s affairs for a time (to his great benefit, including saving his son from an undiagnosed heart defect) said during Nixon that America the Republic was in danger of being destroyed by America the Empire. But maybe after that she went on vacation 4eva

Bizarre trend today of people with no medical expertise or qualifications weighing in on how to medicate ADD/ADHD. Please stop doing this. Having the disease and listening to a podcast or two doesn’t make you an expert. Stop telling people they can self-medicate with nicotine.

2001 Tropical Storm Allison flooded the Texas Medical Center, the largest research center in the country, knocking out even emergency power. Grad students waded through water to meet the dry ice truck so that they could haul boxes of it up many flights of stairs to save frozen samples in freezers.
I saw that tweet and thought “holy shit, there are a lot of grad students losing their MINDS right now”

The interview was on Fox News, where the anchors either (a) don’t know better or (b) feign ignorance and toe the party line to keep their jobs. I *know* of anchors on Fox News & Fox Business who have finished packages and asked, “Did I sound like I believed that?”

Longview, TX (where I grew up) is home to Eastman Chemical plant, which makes plastics. They're also a cancer cluster, possibly related to ethylene oxide and other chemicals being released as air pollution. As in many cities, the plant is in a predominantly Black & Hispanic part of town.
Holy cow Longview.

At this point, I only mute people for two reasons. The first is being annoying, and the second is if they speak with authority on a subject they don’t know anything about. The first one is forgivable.

The folks at @thedailybeast.bsky.social asked me to review Jonathan Haidt's new book and I had some thoughts. The bad cherry-picked data is a problem. But the terribly confused and ignorant policy suggestions are way worse, and way more dangerous
Brilliant review of Haidt's book and moral entrepreneurship by @mmasnick.bsky.social, who brings, as ever, reason & receipts. "Kids and mental health is a very complex issue, and Haidt’s solution appears to be, in the words of H.L. Mencken: clear, simple, and wrong."
The Coddling of the American Parentwww.thedailybeast.com Jonathan Haidt’s new book “The Anxious Generation” blames youth mental health issues on social media in a way that’s easy, wrong, and dangerous.

If the economic damages of climate change are at least 6x > the cost of mitigation (and probably much more imho), why aren’t we acting like it? Because it’s not about economics: it’s about injustice. Those who hold the balance of power + wealth are not those who bear the brunt of the impacts.
The economic commitment of climate change - Naturewww.nature.com Analysis of projected sub-national damages from temperature and precipitation show an income reduction of 19% of the world economy within the next 26 years independent of future emission choices.

Universities are the focus of elite outrage so often because those elites are under the false belief those universities are meritocracies, so any challenge to the authority of the university is perceived as a challenge to their own authority as people privileged enough to be credentialed by them
One of the things universities seem to be misunderstanding about student protesters is that this is no longer an age where institutions can gatekeep and control information. Students have a way to seed their own narrative directly more dynamically than where messages have to go through many layers.

Elegance is valuable. When you’re lucky, you find elegant solutions to a problem. I don’t think you should attempt to write elegant software. I think you should try to refine your craft to the point that it is a muscle memory instead of a priority

OK so people are waffling on alt text again. I'm an artist and also I am blind. So, I'm going to talk about this. The TL;DR is if you don't alt text, your post dies with me. I will never re-anything it, unless I alt text it myself. Some have said I can, and that's cool.

On this date 110 years ago, members of the Colorado National Guard and private security employed by John D Rockefeller used machine guns and fire to kill 21 people — miners, wives, and 11 children - in a tent city not on mine property at Ludlow, Colorado. The Ludlow Massacre became a hot mine war.
