Congratulations to the Labour Party, which will now have a 5 year run with a strong majority in Commons. As a practical matter, Labour can enact its entire platform without meaningful opportunity for opposition to derail anything.

Things that I found charming about U.K. elections when I lived there (briefly): 1. Very short election season. 2. All candidates gather on platform in town square for reading of results. 3. The attire of the candidates of the Monster Raving Loony Party.

1/ 55 years ago today, I was born at Yale University hospital. It was the middle of the Vietnam War. My father was Lt. Commander at the New London Navy base, serving as a pediatrician. Once week, my mother brought to my first protests to hear the reading of the names of the troops killed in action.

Hello, bsky followers of my dad! (this is Madison; you might occasionally see me being snarky in his replies.) Today is his birthday, and he loves validation, so in honor of that, please list your favorite of the ten-or-so sayings he repeats in conversation. I think he’ll appreciate it!

For the same reason handlers of search & rescue dogs occasionally have volunteers put themselves in a position to be "found" alive in a grim disaster scene -- to keep up morale so that these dogs keep working -- I give you this screen shot from the BOP showing the current location of Steve Bannon.

Donald Trump's July 11 sentencing in New York almost certainly will be adjourned, after DA's office filed a letter this morning consenting to adjournment to allow briefing on the issues raised by Trump based upon yesterday's SCOTUS decision on Presidential immunity. www.law360.com/articles/185...

I would be very happy if part of Donald Trump's sentence in New York was requiring him to make a public reading, without edits, of today's 31 page decision for the disbarment of former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, which debunks most of FPOTUS's claims of election fraud in 2020.

1/ I often write: The only thing I know *for certain* about the future is that it has not happened yet. Yesterday’s SCOTUS ruling is a perfect example of how much I need to heed my own mantra. For years, I heard Donald Trump was saying that he was certain that “his Supreme Court justices” . . .

When bad news breaks (like SCOTUS’s Trump immunity decision yesterday) my feed often fills with posts from people who are looking for that “one simple maneuver” that will reverse everything. In my experience (30 years as an attorney, 45 years in politics), there’s virtually never an easy way out.

Whoever decided to broadcast the US v. Uruguay match using the “all 22” camera should be fired and immediately replaced. Just broadcast soccer the way everyone else does. I don’t km now anyone who wants a director to be “innovative” in an elimination game.

1/ Let me explain one way that today's Trump immunity decision threatens the survival of the Republic. Under today's ruling, a President would be immune for any way in which he used the military (a "core function"), even to kill American citizens in America. Theoretically, the soldiers who . . .

My friend and colleague Ken White has written a great thread describing some (but far from all) of the enormous problems with today's decision by Chief Justice Roberts granting Donald Trump criminal immunity on grounds never before accepted by any court. Today's decision threatens the Republic.
There are two elements to the immunity decision that are particularly extreme in a way that many will miss: (1) motive is irrelevant and (2) immune acts are not just excluded from prosecution, they’re excluded from evidence. /1

A difference between me and many of my friends is that most of my friends believe that manners and decorum mean that a person will not participate in fascism. Maybe it is the lesson that my bitter Jewish grandmother taught me, but I've always believed that aristocrats can push us into the ovens.

1/ I'm quoted by the BBC on today's Supreme Court decision in favor of Former President Trump. ---- Legal expert Mitchell Epner told the BBC "this is a major victory for Donald Trump". The court's ruling that Trump has "absolute immunity" for "official acts" as president appears to . . .

When Chief Justice Roberts was nominated, many "wise people" in DC said that Democrats should be re-assured, because John Roberts was "an institutionalist before he was a partisan." If that ever was true (and I doubt it was), it is not true today. Today's Trump decision is pure partisanship.

First SCOTUS Opinion of the Day: Corner Post v. Federal Reserve. Justice Barrett (6-3, standard 3 liberals in dissent) writes that a claim under the APA does not accrue until plaintiff is injured by final agency action. According to dissent, this is a "staggering" decision, undercutting agencies.

1/ My thoughts on the Presidential Race after Thursday night's debate. A. Joe Biden had a very bad night. He appeared frail and disoriented, particularly at the start. He was poorly served by a format that provided for no "fact checking" by the moderators, because he was not up to the job of . .

I have not posted for a while about the movement of Trump Media Technology Group, because it's been so volatile. According to Yahoo!, the "beta" of DJT is 6.19, meaning that its stock price movement has been 6.19x the movement of the average stock. We'll see how DJT moves after sentencing on 7/11.

The thing about establishing standards ex ante is that they do not change in response to political whims. There is an irony to the fact that the Former President Donald Trump falls below the ethical standards to sell booze in New Jersey. I hope enough Americans vote against this moral menace.
