The kinda funny thing about the whole Chardonnay/Yale/hillbilly story is that in the Midwest, grads of THE Ohio State are quite proud of their institution. Now the alum who proclaimed it Hicksville is going to be famous.

Calling all FRINDLE fans, there’s a part two coming soon. The Frindle Files comes out at the end of August. That give you just enough time to re-read the original:) I haven’t read this one, but I have high hopes because FRINDLE is a favorite of so many. #MGSummer

It's 8:38AM on a Thursday. Are you happy you cultivated the habit of critical interpretation right up until you find yourself asking how Penelope from WE DON'T EAT OUR CLASSMATES already knew children were delicious?

Whole families of rabbits are using the 6” between our wrought iron fence and the neighbor’s vinyl as a sort of rabbit freeway. I can’t tell if the dog is living his best life barking at them or just marveling at our stupidity.

I wish I could remember who rec’d this book because I’d send a thank you. If you’re looking for books for middle school do not miss THE OTHER SIDE OF PERFECT. Dual POV between a well-to-do, popular, Indigenous girl and a boy her family takes in after he’s abused by his father. #MGSummer

Also use that time to gather your shoes, put meds/id/valuables/flashlight in your purse, charge devices and make sure there’s drinkable water in your shelter area. You do not want to be walking barefoot after hail takes out your windows.
🌪️ PSA: A tornado WATCH means a tornado may be forming soon and you should prepare, whereas a tornado WARNING means it’s here and you need to take cover *now.* To help remember the difference: if it’s a tornado WATCH, you’ve got TIME ⌚️

A teen returned my copy of “The Hope of Elephants” by Amanda Rawson Hill. I reread it as I ponder who to loan it to next. As a mom of a young adult with a cancer predisposition syndrome (who has spent most of his life on chemo), this novel in verse gets it right. You need to read it. #kidlit

Periodic reminder: Everyone's going to have a hot take. Including George Clooney. Instead of debating the merits, we should be focusing on: 1. Are you registered to vote? 2. Have you checked your registration? 3. Have you told 5 people about Project 2025? 4. Have you called your Senators?

So true especially because folks asked to sacrifice their jobs are in fields that are A -impossible to replace said job like journalism B - paid very little to start with like librarians and teachers C - providing health benefits that most people cannot take for granted
I think it’s in questionable taste to order someone to quit their job if you’re not also offering to pay their bills.

we all make moral compromises to survive under capitalism, except you, bluesky poster, the only pure creature in the land, who, by virtue of said purity, has the ethical clarity to decide who should walk away from their salary and benefits

I feel like one of the overlooked parts of the whole ‘dismantle the Department of Education’ discussion is that it would impact BOTH public and private schools. Private school services for speech/ OT/ PT/ special education are provided via the Department of Ed. It would impact all families.

This is how you write a book review that makes people want to run right out and grab a copy!
Adept and fleet footed with nary a misstep, allow me to recommend a little something to wring your heart out and then pump it up all over again. I review the incredible Mid Air by Alicia D. Williams #kidlit 📚👍 afuse8production.slj.com/2024/07/12/r...

School Library in a Nutshell:

I honestly think this issue would be approached differently if every office building, congressional hearing, car dealership, beauty salon, any place where adults gather had to do the same drills we routinely ask of 6-year-olds.
I’ve been in a classroom during an active shooter lockdown drill, it is INFURIATING. The craziest part is how good at the drill the kids were, and how visibly frazzled/upset the teacher was.

I feel like toy bongos are the things you check out from the library for your nephew when you’re still mad at your sister for ruining your favorite sweater back in high school.

Gordon Korman is one of the most reliable authors in the category of Things Middle Schoolers Will Actually Read. FAKER is no exception. It’s the story of a boy whose family moves from town to town because Dad is a con artist. The ending isn’t quite realistic, but kids won’t care. #MGSummer

turns out my state is having a contest on "I Voted" sticker designs, and I would like to show you the most metal one by a middle schooler:

Hey teachers, no need to hand out this one. Skip it and spend an extra 15 minutes reading aloud. Everyone will be the better for it.
This paper from my 3rd grader’s end-of-year stack started quite an editor rant (SAID IS PERFECTLY FINE AND FORCING YOURSELF TO USE OTHER DIALOGUE TAGS CAN BE EXTREMELY DISTRACTING BUT IF YOUR TEACHER SAYS TO DO THIS YOU SHOULD BUT IN REAL LIFE PLEASE JUST USE SAID)

Seems like an apt day to note that schools are evaluated on student tests that center on two areas: reading and math. Social studies, science, and literature got the shaft decades ago. We are the not the better for it.

If your child’s read Smile or Sisters until the cover came off, add Kayla Miller to the mix. The first book in the series is Click. #MGSummer

There’s an unending stream of programs that promise to do for education what could be accomplished with feeding kids, adding student mental health resources, and paying teachers more than you do IT managers.
In an April speech promoting the software, he [Alberto Carvalho, the district’s superintendent] promised it would “democratize” and “transform education.” In response to skeptics of A.I., he asked, “Why not allow this edutainment approach to capture & captivate their attention, be the motivator?” 🙃
A.I. ‘Friend’ for Public School Students Falls Flatwww.nytimes.com Los Angeles schools hired a start-up to build an A.I. chatbot for parents and students. A few months later, the company collapsed.

It's disappointing the number of people who come into the library because they received paperwork electronically and have to struggle to print it out and submit it to someone else who will only accept it physically 😞 📚 #PubLibs

Today is one of those days I wish I was in the classroom rather than summer vacation. I would be handing THE TENTH MISTAKE OF HANK HOOPERMAN to all my realistic fiction fans and then just waiting a few days until they returned to tell all their friends to read it. Don’t miss this one. #MGSummer

It’s buried in the last paragraph but part of this is few pharmacists want to work for them. If your working conditions are dangerous for patients, it’s still your liability. Walgreens won’t lose their license to practice but you could.
Walgreens will close a “significant portion” of its 8,600 U.S. locations over the next three years as it struggles to keep up with a rapidly evolving retail pharmacy industry, the company announced Thursday.
