History will recall that the New York Times, that bastion of "the liberal media," on July 4, 2024 chose to give prime space on their op-ed page to a theocratic absolutist who argued that people shouldn't vote, even though he himself has voted in the last 2 elections (but nowhere is that mentioned).

When I first saw this I thought "no, that can't possibly be true." But alas, the Times did indeed choose today of all days to publish a right winger's recycled piece about how they don't vote, failing to mention that the author basically thinks absolutist theocracies are cool.

Me, hootin' and hollerin' like my team won the Super Bowl, at the first real rain we've gotten in 47 days.

My first response to anything at all is usually "I must research this" and boy howdy does that make cookouts awkward.

“Wait to learn more” is not picking sides. It’s not believing or disbelieving one party over another. It’s recognizing that a major source of information is sketchy af and we need more information.

If the cops grab you at a protest remember: 1) Ask "am I free to go?" if they say yes, GO. 2) if they say no, say "I am invoking my right to an attorney and my 5th amendment right to remain silent" then SHUT UP. wait for your lawyer.

Alternatively make friends with a criminal defense lawyer who does 1st amendment cases. I miss @gregdoucette.bsky.social so much. But yes before you go to ANY protest, know 1) who will show up with cash to bail you out and 2) who your lawyer is

This is a good piece and I have been thinking about this since the Supreme Court's decision on gerrymandering in 2019. In general, if people can vote out politicians that enact policies that don't have popular support, that's what they do. Violence happens when elections really don't matter.

(raises hand) I've been obsessed with partisan gerrymandering for nearly two decades, recognizing it as both a cause of congressional radicalization, and as proof of the GOP's fundamentally seditious intentions. Anyway, we're here.

I've been thinking these days about everyone who was warning FOR LITERAL DECADES about how the GOP were taking every opportunity to push judges on to the courts - not just the supremes, all of them - and delaying democratic picks and how that would matter. and it does.

Just at the most basic level it is really unhealthy to have to thought about Donald Trump as much as everyone in America has over the last nine or so years. Spending a decade of my life thinking about a super boring, super shitty crook and all the bad stuff he's doing or might do. It's embarrassing.

Vote. Also knock on doors, volunteer for campaingns. Get involved locally. Go to meetings, work with others, make your own community safer, better, more organized. Know what's on school board agendas. Show up and comment. Give politicians a reason to know what you want, and why they should care.

This is why you wait for the lawyers to weigh in, bc you read the ruling and dissent with your normal brain and think it’s bad, but the lawyer will be able to tell you “Oh no, it’s much much worse.”

There are two elements to the immunity decision that are particularly extreme in a way that many will miss: (1) motive is irrelevant and (2) immune acts are not just excluded from prosecution, they’re excluded from evidence. /1

Boosted today and practising the flappy flappy way! Also oodles of antihistamines thanks to @rahaeli.bsky.social. So far I'm just tired, which is expected after a trip out. I'm on the list for NHS vaccines and home visits, but they bollocksed it up yet again, and I couldn't risk waiting for weeks.

Got my covid/5G booster yesterday and have no soreness today. The flappy flappy trick really works! (Flappy flappy trick is when you flap your arms like a bird for 15 seconds as soon as you get the shot, then as often as you remember, even after your nighttime bathroom break. Flappy flappy, baby!)
