Things are going very well when we've reached the "Don't worry, the military won't obey orders to kill civilians" stage of democratic backsliding. It's the sweet spot, where good things happen. Right where we want to be.

The reason that this bothers Roberts is because he is a political actor who will simply ignore precedent to affect the prosecution of a president with whom he disagrees. Thus, he feels completely secure in the power of his court to check a rogue executive, should that executive be a Democrat.
Absolutely wild that the court accuses the dissent of "fearmongering" with "extreme hypotheticals" when the actual basis for the indictment is a coup attempt that led to an attack on the capitol

TIL that while "freedom seeker" is a (mostly) contemporary term for "runaway slaves," many antebellum newspapers hurled the epithet "freedom *shrieker*" at abolitionists, often to accuse them of hypocrisy.

biden needs to go on TV and say that SCOTUS has just given him, joe biden, the power to commit any crime he wants as president, and that this erasure of a bedrock principle of the rule of law and the constitutional order terrifies him as an american citizen

An age watermark: not so much "I paid money for a ringtone," but "I fantasized about starting a business selling ringtones."

I once asked for Cory with no e and the barista, to their undying credit, came back at me with Kori.
I thought I’d gotten every version/permutation of the Katherine/Kate situation…but I was wrong! Kety 😐

Those poor video game misogynists concerned about man-jaws and tomboy busts all imprinted at a terribly early age on Lara Croft's first low-res simply polygonned bosom: it's why they also think the Cybertruck is beautiful.

"were camped" is such an interesting phrase, NYT stylebook should be leaked ASAP so we can understand just what exactly they have to avoid saying

UGH. Ten years and 4 months later, I re-located this footnote to an antislavery pamphlet pointing out that it was printed on linen and not cotton paper so as to avoid the material economy of slavery.... that REALLY should have made it into my book but didn't bc I forgot. Oh well. Here it is anyway.

Not to pit two icons against each other, but: ABBA's "Dancing Queen" OR Diana Ross' "I'm Coming Out"?

On June 19, 1865, the Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce emancipation. On June 20, 1865, an unnamed Black man employed by the 34th Iowa Regiment was killed in Galveston after a confrontation with white locals on a public sidewalk. #Juneteenth is a celebration and a commemoration.

I am a historian, and I Google things--dates, names, basic facts--all the time because my memory sucks.
ok i have another quote tweet prompt. what's something, big or small, related to your job or hobby, that most people don't know that you would like to have them know? it can be a concept, a piece of history, some vocabulary, or something else.

"...when I wrote pieces critical of Trump, members of the alt-right pounced, and they attacked us through our daughter. They pulled pictures of her from social media and photoshopped her into gas chambers and lynchings." The headline does this a deep disservice www.nytimes.com/2024/06/09/o...

This AP tweet is an instant candidate for the Museum of American Fascism. Carve it in stone and put it over the entrance. It should be an enduring source of burning shame and embarrassment for the entire organization, as well as a warning to other media

You start missing your spares halfway through the third beer.
It's like pool, bowling, or darts. There's a sweet spot where you've relaxed enough to be flowing, but not so much that you're clumsy.

Please don't let this trend spread to the Midwest. State officials would be dumping barrels of hot sauce and exploding pallets of pepper like booze during prohibition.

This is where the current University positions fall apart. We can't speak out against the genocide because that's antisemitic because it is opposing Israel & Israelis might be sad - but Israelis are *also* speaking out against the genocide & we are punishing them too... Who are we protecting?
The University of Minnesota has paused the hiring of Israeli scholar Raz Segal to head the institution’s Holocaust and Genocide school over his principled position that Israel is perpetrating a genocide. Truly reprehensible. jewishinsider.com/2024/06/univ...

Look, the job of the Supreme Court is just to call balls (something that should never be seen in public nor touched by anyone of the same sex) and strikes (which threaten to bring about full communism because they infringe upon the sovereign property rights of virtuous owners of private property).

When I worked in the Department of Health and Human Services, we weren’t allowed to spend federal funds on a water cooler. That luxury might erode public trust. So if you didn’t want to drink questionable tap water, you gave personal funds to the “water club” that paid for water cooler refills.

Here in Iowa City, I can maintain with innocence confidence that cybertrucks are not real.
everyone is the world is playing CYBERSTRUCK, the fun new mandatory game in which you are eliminated when you see your first cybertruck in the wild rules are similar to whamageddon, but with no end date: • the cybertruck must be real, in the wild • as soon as you notice the cybertruck, you are out

When we talk about "taxing rich people" there's folks who think we're talking about Aunt Edna who has the second summer home. The astronomical levels of "rich" that now exist are almost unfathomable to people. It's the stuff of vast empirical dynasties. We're talking about taxing emperors.
The ultra-wealthy will often take whole fleets of cars with them when they travel, loading vehicles, along with motorbikes and other toys, onto chartered cargo aircraft that follow their private jets. This is how they do it: cnn.it/3X8V14a
