I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:
if you’re waiting for everyone around you to wake up, you’ll wait forever. this is how the people grinding our bones to make their bread WANT you to be. paralyzed, alienated & purposeless

An underrated possible future is that in a few months time Donald Trump loses the election and then spends the rest of his life in court and in jail for his many crimes. Like, this could definitely be how things go

The New Yorker is really good at long form journalism, but their political analysis is just trash. It’s stuck in 2006 and just can’t get beyond the received political wisdom of 20 years ago.

I want you all to know that I had the Dabney Coleman at Dan Tana's, an 18 oz New York strip. He was a goddamn movie star. You couldn't do the 80s without that guy. Fantastic in everything.

a useful exercise is to ask how the political press would be framing the election if the positions were reversed, meaning, if Trump were an incumbent presiding over a strong economy wielding a powerful campaign apparatus and Biden was the shambolic challenger on trial for multiple criminal offenses

For me--and I know I am very much on my own with this opinion--it's movies that don't star Ryan Gosling. I've just never been a fan, and I can't even tell you why. An undefinable smugness maybe?

They charged this Emory professor with battery for asking an officer “what are you doing?” when they were brutalizing a student protester. Just viciously threw her on the ground and then charged *her* with a crime.
