Representative Jesse Edwards, a Republican New Hampshire State Representative, called teens “ripe” and “fertile” when speaking against a bill that would raise the state’s minimum age for marriage from 16 to 18. Despite his remarks, the bill passed in the state’s House of Representatives.

the fact that the rest of the people in the room didn't swarm him and drag him outside is baffling to me
Avatar
if you're familiar with the layout of the chamber, it becomes a lot clearer why that isn't really feasible
Avatar
Avatar
Also because they didn't want to drag him out; they liked what he said and voted for it
Avatar
well, the Republicans immediately around him, at least

Does it lack windows? Have you heard of a place called Prague?
Avatar
The windows don't open if I recall.

All windows open. Not all windows close after they’re opened.

- he made it from the well on the GOP side of the room, so most people in his immediate vicinity agreed w/him - the chairs are packed so tightly together, you can't really get out unless everyone in your row btwn you & the aisle agrees - there are 400 reps, which would lead to a crush at the exits
Avatar
also, if we dragged people out every time someone made a stupid remark, we wouldn't have much time for doing any actual voting.

Darn it. Not those trusty Russian windows that seem to be deadly even when in the basement.

I think V for Vendetta is an unrepentantly toxic movie, but I also think the V character should visit this guy
Avatar
I'd love to know your thoughts here. I first read the Graphic Novel and I love the movie...
Avatar
Okay. In my perhaps unpopular opinion, I think V for Vendetta is utterly toxic. Our “hero” is a vigilante, no better than the things he says he hates, and unaware of the irony. He infantilizes, sexualizes, and tortures Natalie Portman’s character for no sane purpose, and I don’t enjoy it. (1)
Avatar
I will compare V for Vendetta with Watchmen, which (while hardly a perfect film) to me argues that if there were superheroes, they would probably be awful fascists. But this film ends still championing the “hero”, adulation voiced by his still-gaslit victim. I find that sick.
Avatar
Add in that the government plot to give us a disease and sell us the cure is now a central Covid-denier conspiracy theory, and the whole thing is utterly distasteful. There’s no element of satire to the film. I watched it last year to see if I was being too harsh in my memory, and still hated it.
Avatar
V is straight up insane. He's Chaotic Neutral *at best* and is on nothing short of a revenge fueled rampage. Not super surprising given Vendetta is right there in the title. He's so messed up he has no rational foundation to interact with the world. The same is true for the "villains" in the story.
Avatar
My take, again like Watchmen, is that this is anti-capitalist and very anti-right wing. This isn't about denying diseases. The pharma company created a virus and the cure in order to 1. false flag a terror attack it then used to grab absolute power and 2. make all of its party elite very rich.
Avatar
First off, both graphic novels are written by the same guy. So, he is making the same sort of points. And as someone points out below, V is not the hero and he is quite insane.
Avatar
Lastly, you can view what he did to Evey as making him just as bad as Norsefire. He did what he thought needed to be done. He became insane. She got Stockholm Syndrome. Both results are equivalent. I think it is a masterpiece on morality and modern times. But...
Avatar
I will point out that in the original comic book v is absolutely an monster and is not someone to be lauded. I always felt like the movie made V out to be waymore heroic than he was in the book.
Avatar
V isn't supposed to be a hero, though.

So apparently tweeting about #PedoconTheory from the House floor is "inappropriate", yet Rep. Edwards gets to double down on his weirdness about how "fertile" 16 year olds are...
