"We know how Donald Trump thinks America should be united: by reelecting him and allowing him and his cronies to ransack the country’s institutions." I wrote about the depressing aftermath of the assassination attempt newrepublic.com/article/1838...
Nothing Has Changed: Trump Is Still Trumpnewrepublic.com After being shot at a rally on Saturday, Trump is a bigger threat to American democracy than ever before. Why aren’t Democrats acting like it?

The word "allowed" says everything about his post.

It's interfering to see in the Commission meeting transcripts how courrly these men born in the late 19th century were. I saw deference more than compromise, as when junior staff who knew more nitty-gritty stuff about the investigation were excluded from the interview with Mrs. Kennedy.

They also deserve credit for acting on the realization that to do their job properly, they'd have to conduct their own investigation, not just rely on the flimsy material Hoover gave them. But yes, plenty of wrongheaded moves, even when well-intentioned (like deference to Kennedy family feelings).

My very big complaint about the Warren Commission is the lack of humility in their report. Although some staff advised otherwise, they took a stance of Olympian certainty that soon left them open to attack.

I've long thought the fact that I don't have a middle name means I could never be a good assassin.

How about if they first put money behind making sure everyone who has difficulty securing an ID gets one?

About Biden supposedly "weaponizing" the DOJ (i.e., doing what Trump has vowed HE actually will): The current Court wouldn't have cleared a path for presidential lawlessness if they thought for a moment that BIDEN would take that path. A backhanded admission of who is and is not the criminal here.

Up until the debate, I was an enthusiastic Biden supporter. Now I wish he'd resigned beforehand...in which case, we could have seen Harris mop the floor with Trump.

It was not for nothing that Ta-Nehisi Coates called Trump "the first white president"—not a return to the default, but elected because he was white.

I can’t believe the Supreme Court just ruled that the president can sleep outdoors in a public space.

Of course it's likely that if the GOP has a working majority under a second Trump administration, they'll suddenly realize that ending the filibuster is a *fine* idea before the Dems get their shot.

Not so hilariously, this piece was written twelve years ago.
The landmark reversal nullifies all previously lawful forms of right and makes it very difficult for Americans to make ethical decisions or be generally decent human beings without facing criminal charges.
Supreme Court Overturns 'Right v. Wrong'www.theonion.com WASHINGTON—Striking down the judicial precedent that established the legal supremacy of right over wrong more than two centuries ago, the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned Right v. Wrong.

The "backpacker on vacation" line calls to mind (though apparently not Gorsuch's) the famous line from Anatole France about the law, in its majestic equality, forbidding both rich and poor to sleep under bridges.

One of my first thoughts after the debate was how well Harris would have handled Trump. I believe she'd have been right there with everything folks now say Biden should have said.

Hope you're moving a lot of those ARCs!

Unfortunately, this seems way less reassuring after last night's debate.
Avatar
I was until last night that rare thing, an enthusiastic Biden supporter, and I still believe he would be an effective president for another four years. Now I agree completely with your essay, especially with Trump listening to his advisors and seeming normal as he lies and lies (and lies).

My favorite too. And I like how the later perception of Cochrane maps onto the later perception of Roddenberry.

Have you read the original novel? It's terrific!

I've been arguing for a long time that Raina and others like her (rather than superheroes) represent the true mainstream of comics. I do have one small beef with the intro, however: THE BEATLES were "The Beatles for teenagers."
