You beat the fucking shit out of them, both at the ballot box and by punching them in their stupid fucking mouths. And you keep beating the fucking shit out of them every goddamn day, even if you're tired of it.
How do we adjust to a world where major democracies have long-term viable fascist parties? It feels like we'll just be having existential election after existential election, and we have to win every time whereas they only have to win once.

Stop doing free labor. And anybody in any kind of university admin job, stop asking your colleagues to do free labor.
This is spot on & only worsening for many of us US professors with too many administrative, supervision, research, outreach, etc responsibilities while we’re off-contract (not paid) for the 3 summer months. With zero ability to unionize. I’ve been a faculty in both the UK & US, it’s worse here.😢

Just another reminder that Yascha Mounk may be the absolute worst political scientist alive, regardless of what criteria you use to develop your ranking.
Another asinine 'solution' to the Biden Problem, this time from Yascha Mounk. Again, these people think their *entire job* is political strategy and predicting poll numbers. Yet they somehow think that spending months drawing attention to their own party's weaknesses is a good strategy!

Well, that would end the "should Biden drop out" debate, so I am not sure I see a downside.
I get the gallows humor of urging Biden to do crimes to stop Trump/SCOTUS etc. But the truth is that if Biden actually committed a serious, obvious crime in office (assassination, for example), I'd bet my bottom dollar he would be impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate with Dem votes.

To make everyone feel better, reminder that whoever is elected will be president during America's 250th anniversary (semiquincentennial). It seems like it symbolizes something I can't quite put my finger on.

From my experience going to events, meeting candidates, and polling for the 2020 Iowa Caucuses, there was a huge difference between Harris as a candidate and the campaign she ran. In person, she was the best candidate I met (and I met basically all of them).
these numbers are basically vindication of one of my points in the NYT conversation, which is that whoever is the nominee inherits Biden’s position for the simple reason that they will be standard-bearers for the Biden administration.

This fucking state
The Iowa Supreme Court ruled that the state’s six-week abortion ban can be enforced soon while a lawsuit against it proceeds. It will take at least 21 days for the case to go back to the district court, during which time abortion will remain legal.

The new Slow Burn season on the Briggs Initiative is really good. And also a reminder that right wing revanchism has a long history in the US. Social movements have often triumphed over it...but not without a struggle. slate.com/podcasts/slo...

A boy tries hard to be a man His mother takes him by the hand If he stops to think, he starts to cry Oh why? If you walk away, walk away I walk away, walk away I will follow. If you walk away, walk away I walk away, walk away I will follow. I will follow. I was on the inside When they pulled the four walls down I was looking through the window I was lost, I am found. If you walk away, walk away I walk away, walk away I will follow. If you walk away, walk away I walk away, walk away I will follow. I will follow. Your eyes make a circle I see you when I go in there Your eyes, your eyes Your eyes, your eyes. If you walk away, walk away I walk away, walk away I will follow. If you walk away, walk away I walk away, walk away I will follow. I will follow.
The Replacements '81 Kids Don't Followyoutu.be Professional-quality live video of very early Replacements, from right around the time their first LP ("Sorry, Ma") was released. Shot at Sept 5th '81 Twin/Tone label showcase at 7th St. Entry, MPLS. Somewhat different lyrics than the version on "Stink", unless Paul just forgot 'em. Taken from Twin/Tone web site.

We saw it at a crappy theater where the sound from the Iron Giant bled through the walls. Still scared the shit out of me.
Watching everyone's memories of watching Blair Witch pour in is incredible. Person after person talking about dead silence in the theater, whole crowds flattened, people sobbing in the parking lot for 20 minutes, not being able to sleep. That's cinema, baby, and that's down to Heather Mike and Josh.

I am the exact age of the Brat Pack, so I'm just the audience for Andrew McCarthy's rambly and touching documentary Brats, which is about the '80s and vanity and youth and careers and hopes and injuries and, most relatably for me, about the choice to look back, or to let it go, in late middle age.

Some parts of my university would exploit this by sending bullshit hard copy letters of administrative sanction to a faculty members mailbox during the summer with a short deadline for them to appeal. If you don’t check your mail, that’s on you. We reformed this a few years ago thankfully.
For those who don't know: your institution mostly can't ask anything specific from you for those 3 months and it also allows you to include "summer salary" in grant applications to genuinely supplement your income

A Minnesota Republican Senate candidate posted a map that he said showed serious crime in Minneapolis. In reality, the “crime map” actually showed the location of drinking fountains in the city
