This is what finally got me to cancel my subscription. I'm not sure if the @nytimes.com leadership is genuinely authoritarian or just so lost in its navel-gazing it can't see what it's doing, but I *do* know this: Whoever wrote this editorial is an idiot & I'm not paying to hear this shit anymore.
This is the nyt's view of speech

"Without fear of being shamed or shunned." Jesus Christ. Get bent.
Avatar
the short form of half the editorial page is Stop Yelling At Me For Being An Asshole and I see they have finally codified it
Avatar
It would probably be a funny bit to take the personal anecdote portions of every NYT OpeD and post it on r/AITA
Avatar
They should called it “am I the bedbug?”

...how much would I need to earn via Patreon to make that a side hustle? Asking for me...looking at my pile of projects to work on...

This is at least 91% Bret Stephens' creation (meaning he's the voice that crap editor and owner listen to)-- the level of whinging that comes from a lifetime of throwing rocks at people from behind an impenetrable barricade is unmistakable
Avatar
I'm surprised he doesn't have an endorsement deal with Pampers by now.
Avatar
Genuinely disappointed that Oops! I Crapped My Pants was an SNL creation and not an actual product. The other 9% is World's Most Unpalatable Soccer Dad Ross Douthat and elder whiny blob of triple-bleached goo David Brooks.
Avatar
I keep this handy for when his name is mentioned.

in a just world he would have been run out of the newsroom in shame after the Bretbug incident alas

I'd use the comic strip of someone doing the rounds of media to say they're being silenced, but they're using arguably the biggest media platform in the country that they own to do it

Remember the time they were carrying on about how Dershowitz not being invited to the cool parties was an urgent national crisis? Clearly this really is who they are.
Avatar
Sir! Decorum means he deserves his full honorifics! That is “Professor Emeritus and alleged child molester Dershowitz.”
Avatar
I'm pretty sure the full version includes his underpants staying on. That's very important.
Avatar
We must not forget "Proposer of Torture Warrants" from the Shrub years. I'm determined to make sure that's remembered.

If you treat Nazis like Nazis, doesn't that make you the intolerant one? Makes you think.... of cancelling the Times.
Avatar
they certainly Both-Sided Hitler in teh 1930s .

The Founding Fathers of the United States: famously known for not shaming or shunning each other for their shit takes.
Avatar
They just want to say the Confederates had a point without people being mean to them Kevin!
Avatar
In their pearl-clutching, don't they realize they're advocating for critics of the initial person to lose "the right to speak their minds and voice their opinions" in response?
Avatar
You shunned them by dropping your subscription, and shame them by pointing out their shittiness on social media. This is the way.
Avatar
I cancelled when they decided to have Rufo be a contributor. Pamela Paul got me 80% there, but that Rufo shit makes it very clear what their game is.

the first amendment says that no one is allowed to make you feel bad

Best example of the value and impact of shaming: “Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness.” It was then McCarthy’s turn to be stunned into silence, as Welch asked, “Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?”
Avatar
They don’t just want to have shitty positions, they want us to like it
Avatar
I don't recall which straw broke my back a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't missed it for a single day since I canceled.

Avatar
Kevin, you’re *shunning* the Times based on what they said!
Avatar
the fucking nerve. these are the same assholes who LOUDLY insist that liberals need safe space, and meanwhile, they're arguing "assholes need a safe space and have their egos fluffed for their awful opinions"
Avatar
Can they think of any point in history - American or otherwise - where you could say *literally anything* in a public forum or town meeting that wouldn't get you shamed or shunned?
Avatar
Whose tonedeaf candor will be held accountable? Whose indignation will be the most righteous? Whose feet will walk a bad-faith one-way street while wagging their finger at others? Find out tonight on Shame Or Shun!
Avatar
Not just without being shamed or shunned. Without “FEAR” of it even possibly happening.
Avatar
Avatar
Ah, so the proud puppy killing governor should not be shamed or shunned? Good grief.
Avatar
help help i'm being shamed and shunned!

“No one should have to hear that they’re wrong” are they kidding

I only subscribe to NYT Cooking, but I've been questioning that decision.

I find their recipes so weird. Grab a Mark Bittman cookbook and you’ll be happier
