i remember so many of these from issues of star trek magazine. during voyager there was even a magazine that recapped around 4 episodes per issue with tons of pictures and fold-out posters, and my room was almost fully wallpapered in them

frakes describes the practical effects for this take in the first contact director's commentary, but it's so cool to see the setup in situ. i love how much fun everybody's always having on Trek.

So many of these photos look like templates for "This could be us but you playin" or "Me and who" memes

that's exactly what I've been saving to my phone lmao

Even seeing the setup my brain has a hard time processing it. Practical effects are still so satisfying both in execution and to see assembled.

i hope practical effects someday get a renaissance because you're right, finding a way to execute a certain shot using mostly meat-space techniques is just infinitely more beautiful and engaging and compelling as a viewer than anything generated by a computer, no matter how realistic
