The 2024 version of @gravitysra1nbow.bsky.social 's WWII image of the citizen soldier is two middle class Ukrainians using American IFVs to destroy a Russian T-90 in Avdiivka.

We all saw the video where a M2A2 Bradley destroyed a T-90M in Stepove, north of Avdiivka. These are the soldiers that took out the T-90M. Serhii on the left and Oleksandr on the right. One used to be a teacher, the other a mechanic. Now they defend Ukraine. Balls of steel! ✊

Spot on. BoB, for better and worse, is the war as we wish to recall it. James Jones’ novel The Thin Red Line drew from his experiences as a pre-war volunteer who fought on Guadalcanal. The novel is dark, comic in a way that makes you wince, and starkly beautiful in it its portrayal of men at war.

Margaret MacMillan (of Paris 1919 fame) wrote a swan song called simply War!: How Conflict Shapes Us and she talks about that. There's also a theme in industrial war where more soldiers came from the city and they loved being à la campagne (pun intended) for the first time in their lives.
