One year ago today I joined the Bluesky team It's been an exciting, fun journey so far and I've learned a ton I've never worked as hard in my life as I do here and I really enjoy the challenges of building @scale, distributed social on a budget. Looking forward to what the next year has in store!

the whole ‘actually, killing the villain makes us just as bad as him’ trope had done incomprehensible damage to society and i’m not kidding

Here's a little look at my past year of Github activity to commemorate the anniversary too. That period from end of December through January is when I was working on the AppView V2 and Dataplane which are the backbone of every read-request on the Bluesky app.

I already invite people on X to join us here weekly. But thanks to this analysis, I've decided to re-create my "scientists who do climate" list here this summer, and manually invite each of the 3,000 members on X to join us. If you're still on X, pls consider inviting your followers to join us too!

Today in: Things Jaz Learned About Video Mobile phones don't actually record in vertical aspect ratios, they record everything in 16:9 and then provide metadata in the video file telling the player to rotate the video 90 degrees during playback. Checking width/height of a video is tricky

This recently fun-employed narwhal skipped to the desert to complete a hike on my forever list. May the calm of the natural world flow freely into your body.

The project is complete. The feline has expressed her satisfaction.
I gutted an old CRT TV today. It's eventually gonna be a cat bed. 3

Of course, as soon as I leave for a vacation my feeds start triggering a crash that i've never seen before despite not having touched that code for months.

Sorry and best of luck to my former Planet Labs coworkers affected by layoffs this week This second cut makes ~30% headcount reduction since last August Things are not looking great for companies trying to make a difference in the fight against climate change right now :( Hire Ex-Planeteers!

Okay, got things back online and my feeds will be catching up but might take a few minutes cause they've got 5+ hours of backlog to index. Feeling pretty bad for my SSD right now... 39% flash wearout and 1.06PB written to this tiny little 2TB m.2 NVME... Hope it can hold out another month or so.
FYI my Internet is out right now so all my feeds are down along with my stats page and other personal Bsky projects. Hopefully my Internet will come back up soon. Sorry folks!

Here's what activity on a social network looks like during a US Presidential Debate Posts: 10/sec -> 13/sec (+30%) Likes: 36/sec -> 52/sec (+44%) Language-wise, posts in the past 6 hrs are 55% English vs 39% recently I'll keep an eye on the charts to see if it gets more interesting
@jaz.bsky.social can you post network activity graphs as this debate happens? lol. Posts but also likes / replies. Afaik that data dog panel isn't public.

Okay I think I got it mostly working... Fallback is gonna be missing video descriptions but it's the best we can do rn without YouTube deciding to be nice to us and stop rate-limiting us...
Youtube doesn't like us again, we're looking into it...

My first meaningful contribution to Atproto (slowly) coming to life 🥹
PDS self-hosters! we have a distro release coming soon. the first part is schema support for starter packs, a feature we just released that uses records in the PDS. second is early OAuth backend support. we don't have the atproto OAuth system documented/specified, but will be soon
