Yesterday, I shared this same Canada Day thread on Bluesky, Threads, and X. Here's what I found. 🧵
“Canada is such a northern country, don’t we want a little global warming?” I often hear. In a nutshell, NO. We’re warming 2x faster than the rest of the world, driving extreme heat, flood, and sea level rise we are not prepared for. The wildfire season started in Feb this year. Feb! #canadaday

Normalized responses -- the total number of likes and shares, divided by number of followers -- were highest here (yay!) and lowest on X.

There was an even bigger difference in the comments received. All on Threads and all but one here were positive, constructive, or neutral (one person was just being a jerk, not a troll). Only 18% on X were positive or neutral. The rest were negative, many highly so.

Since I had such a large sample (nearly a hundred), I analyzed X comments by category. 47% said climate wasn't changing, I was lying, ignorant, or not really a scientist 15% said I was in it for the $ 14% were insults Content warning: Please don't read the fine print if you're sensitive.

I already invite people on X to join us here weekly. But thanks to this analysis, I've decided to re-create my "scientists who do climate" list here this summer, and manually invite each of the 3,000 members on X to join us. If you're still on X, pls consider inviting your followers to join us too!

It's important to note that this single-post analysis above is entirely consistent with a much more comprehensive analysis by @ketanjoshi.co showing that changes in the X algorithm and moderation policies that began in Oct 2022 have massively favoured trolls and penalized climate scientists. See:
Musk is remaking Twitter into a climate denier sanctuaryketanjoshi.co I got some data that analyses how climate deniers have changed their audience size, relative to pro-climate accounts, on Musk's Twitter. It's....not good.

Funny how that works when the only strong argument to buy one of his ill-conceived shitty cars is still to lower your personal carbon footprint, in a not-so-friendly enviroment of public transportation
Avatar
There's plenty of alternative EVs now, so that logic doesn't even really hold
Avatar
also you dont reduce your carbon footprint if the factory burns through labor and parts and the thing gets moldy or explodes
Avatar
I mean, personal carbon footprint was a thing cooked up by industry to try and worm out of actual industrial scale pollution (which is much more pressing than personal vehicle use). EVs ARE overall much lower in carbon footprint than ICE cars, but Teslas aren't the only game in town any longer.

Pretty sure that personal vehicle use, when you add all of us up, is industrial scale pollution.

🎯 Still, transport under, say, 30 miles is a big deal in the rural envrmnt I chose to live in, so I'm happy w/ the quarter share of a non–T*sla ev (+ my bicycle), but that doesn't mean I'm stopping there.
Avatar
Very true!, but they still have a point w/ their charger grid (at least for the lazies amonbst us)
Avatar
Most that are EV advocates (I'm one) argue, that IF you're going to buy a new car, THEN make it an EV. It's not to sell/junk your current ICE car immediately. Same argument goes for the used market, though used EVs are harder to come by (in the US).
Avatar
When my 20yo Beamer died 8 years ago, I bought a Renault ev that I share w/ 3 ppl in my village now. Works like a charm (in 9 of 10 cases)!
Avatar
This is the way. Honestly if the EV-robo-taxi thing wasn't such a pipe dream, it would be a nice solution. Many/most of us would not want to own a vehicle anymore if they could reliably get one at the door in 5 minutes, and it was affordable. For longer trips, train/HS-rail.

I want this so much for the elderly in my area! 🖤

I bought a hybrid in 2020. It’s a great buy just so you can have options.
Avatar
I used to have a Chevrolet Volt (followed its development since 2007). I loved it, especially the nice large hatchback. But after 5 years, I knew I wanted more EV range and pure EV. So my next car was a BEV with 300+ mile range. I've never had any issues, and was nice to kiss gas goodbye.

Tesla don't publish anything about the pollution which their supply chain causes. Only that the cars are 0 emissions themselves, if they work at all.
Avatar
This has been studied to death by many scientists. EVs, even with higher CO2 build costs, have lower emissions over their life than ICE cars.
Avatar
I'm not saying they don't, just that Tesla don't publish the data for some reason.
Avatar
I haven't dug for any white papers, but you may find this interesting. Page 94 is where supply chain info starts. www.tesla.com/ns_videos/20...

Slightly OT, but 12 Golden Country Greats is indeed one of their best albums 👌

They're still polluting groundwater in their new Grünheide/GER plant, so ...

What are the emissions when they go on fire?
Avatar
Bad, but combustion cars burn much more often, and I'm not sure their fumes while burning are better or worse than EVs burning.
Avatar
They are Very Bad Indeed. I think they have to let the fire burn out. Which can take days before the chance of reignition has passed.
Avatar
Seriously surprised I haven’t seen an accessory for the truck bed that does nothing but literally burn coal for no reason.

Because of carbon trading he sells carbon credits off to internal combustion engine car manufacturers for each EV Tesla manufacture so they can sell things like those big FU Ford F150 pick ups. You buy an EV from him there are still massive amounts of carbon being released.
Avatar
True thing, but OTOH all car makers green-wash their fleets w/ their ev lines
Avatar
Yeah, but he made more money from carbon trading than the cars. It's why he dropped the prices when other manufacturers hit the market.

Wait, are we talking turnover or profits? 'Cause if it's the latter, I'm almost sure he makes more of it from: – Govtl subsidies – Pump-&-dump–moves – TwiXter ads – Reddit posts – Bumper stickers, reading 'Sorry, I bought it before learning what a nutjob he is'

omg K how did I miss this whole thread!! Fantastic analysis. Will share it around with colleagues and friends. Every time I have a dark little moment of 'hmm maybe I should give X another go' I spend even a brief moment lurking there and it is SO dark
Avatar
I feel the same. I miss some people from there so much, but every time I go back it's so discouraging. Thanks!
Avatar
I was glad when I found you here. My experience is much the same as Ketan’s. Each time I go back, all I see is abusive trolls dogpiling anyone who doesn’t fit into their twisted mindset.

Edgelord whose fortune has depended on environmentalists goes all in on climate denial. I’m trying not to fall into a doom spiral but holy shit are a lot of things going to hell all at once.
we went to Lake Louise on our honeymoon in 1981; I've wondered about the condition of the glaciers that fed into the lake. You could touch them from the boats for rent there.
Avatar
I hiked on the Franz Joseph glacier in NZ about 20 years ago. It has retreated by at least a kilometer since then.
I would imagine the same has occurred in Banff National Park as well
Avatar
I keep thinking about how we went to the Columbia Ice Fields up there when I was a kid in the 80s and even then they had maps showing how far the glaciers were retreating. Related: the Crowsnest River ran dry this year.

Avatar
"whose fortune has depended on environmentalists" Was this ever true? He forced/bought his way into Tesla. Even after, his fortune depended on media hucksters selling the public on yet another Randian supergenius who would "fix" the environment by selling a product, not climate scientists.
Avatar
And Tesla turned his tens of PayPal millions into hundreds of billions.
Avatar
Actually I left X/Twitter because after the Musk Takeover it got flooded with nazi trolls, anti vaxxers, climate deniers! It was to be expected and did happen! It was pointless to stay there, just drags you down into hell!
Avatar
This is one of the reasons why I bailed the eff out of Twitter and never returned. Also, I heard they are NOW making people cough up money to create new accounts there. I'm surprised Twitter was not shut down at all.
