The question of "official" vs. "unofficial" acts reminded me of this horrifying case in CA9 where the Bureau of Indian Affairs is arguing they shouldn't be held liable for the actions of a BIA officer who raped a woman because "the officer didn’t rape the woman on behalf of the U.S. government."
Feds shrug off responsibility for BIA officer who raped woman under threat of arrestwww.opb.org A Bureau of Indian Affairs police officer pleaded guilty in a criminal case arising from his rape of a woman who had called for his help. At a hearing Monday in a related lawsuit, the government claim...

“…conspiracist worldviews held in midlife are associated with experiences of loneliness across adolescence and adulthood. Conspiracist worldviews were particularly appealing to participants who were relatively lonely as adolescents and experienced increasing loneliness through their lives.”

I wrote about why anti-abortion groups might try to replicate their success in Louisiana, in getting mifepristone and misoprostol legally redefined as "controlled substances," and what to look out for: they are coming for anyone who helps people get an abortion.
The Real Reason for Louisiana’s New Mifepristone Lawnewrepublic.com Most of the rationale for making mifepristone and misoprostol controlled substances is gibberish. Groups are targeting these drugs because they offer a way around abortion bans.

Other countries have safety nets. The US has women. Their labor creates the illusion of a DIY society, making it seem like we don't need a net. Writing HOLDING IT TOGETHER was a labor of love and fury and I'm so grateful to share it with you all #PubDay www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/697130...

This is a level of evil that I find genuinely difficult to contemplate
Radical Israeli settlers have expanded their attacks on aid trucks passing through the West Bank this month, blocking food from reaching Gaza as humanitarian groups warn that the enclave is sinking deeper into famine.

The sadistic cruelty with which Trump gleefully speaks about immigrants is one of the more glaring markers of how the political culture of the GOP has shifted rightward in the Trumposcene. Not to mention the massive army of jackbooted thugs he will need to assemble to enact his planned deportations.

So grateful to have worked with @intelwire.bsky.social on this piece for many reasons, including his insight and clarity on this point in our history and how it implicates the current moment. Can't say enough about how relevant it is, especially during this election cycle.
We also looked at how extremism can work its way into nation-building projects, and how extremists can leverage unlawful extremist violence to make lawful extremism look like the more benevolent option. Please check it out, and share it around! bsky.app/profile/did:...

You can find the seeds of many contemporary forms of immigration extremism and prejudice in the transcripts of the hearings, including an early iteration of the "model minority" myth and an early iteration of the Great Replacement theory. bsky.app/profile/did:...

There is a framing I’ve seen in more than one place that I think is really helpful: voting is deciding who you’re going to protest In one case it’s a guy who MIGHT be moved by a mass outcry. In the other case it’s a guy who wants the military to shoot protesters in the legs
Yes Biden is bad. But this is what I keep trying to tell people: Trump is worse. And he’s telling us exactly what he will do, the horrors he has planned, for anyone who isn’t straight, white, and male. Make the Democrats’ lives living hell, not your fellow citizens.

israel's ostensible compliance with international war crimes law consists mostly of bombing buildings with dozens of civilians and then being like "there was a hamas guy in there"
It's not "collateral damage" if you've intentionally decided to blow up the whole residential building with a dumb bomb regardless of who's inside. That's just targeting civilians
