When done well, my top 3 are:
1. Sour Cream Glazed
2. Apple Fritter
3. Glazed Chocolate
Honorable mention to crullers, and both white creme and Bavarian creme
Shout out to Ridge Donuts and Donuts Delite in Rochester for being the local donut kings, I salute you!
For my own part, the simple pleasure of a simple cake donut is incomparable.
A Krispy Kreme glazed donut is a delicate wonder.
A good boston creme brings joy.
I can't ever seem to find them anymore, but I was a strong fan of Bavarian creme, which basically are a jelly dount except with creme inside (so no chocolate coating, just powdered sugar)
You can't? I haven't been out for donuts in a while but I seem to recall they're usually on the shelf right next to the Boston Creme.
Many shops don't make a particular variety if nobody buys them there, so maybe it's a local thing?
Big time. You can do the Lower East Side Breakfast Triathlon. Russ and Daughters for Lox, walk to Grand Street for a Bialy from Kossar's and then hit the original Doughnut Plant next door. Bonus Event: grab a quart from The Pickle Guys on the corner
The first one is always set in stone: blueberry cake.
The other two can rotate, but for now? I'm feeling... coconut and those cinnamon apple cider donuts.
Krispy Kreme Original Glazed
Sugar-coated Raspberry Jelly Filled
Glazed yeast donuts from the Amish Shiloh General Store in Hamptonville, North Carolina
Krispy Kreme had three "Island Time" doughnuts in 2021, and by far the best of these was the Piña Colada. I also like the British style twisted Yum Yums (especially the variety containing raisins) and Krispy Kreme's Original Glazed.
I almost never eat donuts (once or twice a year), but I do enjoy a good French cruller, a Boston Creme, and/or a blueberry donut.
Special shout-out to the Holy Donut in and around Portland, Maine, for an undeniably delicious blueberry donut.
