I’m seeing a lot of people on this site posting Newsweek articles that fit a nice lefty narrative. Unless somehow they’ve righted the ship in the last ~year, Newsweek is not currently reliable and you should be wearing rubber gloves and goggles to read their stuff. www.splcenter.org/hatewatch/20...
Newsweek Embraces the Anti-Democracy Hard Rightwww.splcenter.org Newsweek positioned political activist Josh Hammer to run their opinion pages during the runup to the 2020 presidential election, and since that time, the publication has taken a marked radical right

The 2nd leading pollster projects a similar result—if anything a higher range for the Left coalition. This wld be a much stronger result than expected for the Macron bloc. If confirmed, key takeaway: Left & Macronist voters transferred onto each other much more than expected. Clear anti-RN front.

Someone smarter than me pointed out that there are three-ish ways scientists use social media. 1. Professional networking; 2. Scicomm; 3. Self promotion. Twitter was big and diverse enough people could do all 3 there. Post-Twitter, people use different sites for different things. Less biodiversity.
Science folks, one thing about bluesky is there's way less 2 way interaction between people, especially on science posts, than there was on old Twitter. I'm not sure why that is, but it's something I'm keen to encourage. I'd love to hear your thoughts 🧪

Some people really, truly believe that they should never see or experience anything in their lives that they didn't specifically opt into. You will find these people at every point across the political spectrum and in every age bracket.
just for the record, I did not find ribbiting for the toddler to be offensive or burdensome in any way. in fact I had a fun time being a frog momentarily

I sent this link to my parents as a suggestion of something concrete to do and they were like “we ordered ours weeks ago, we have a postcard party already planned, we’re thinking about other ways to get work done”.

THE sentence of the day: A Macronist incumbent in the Marseille region came in 3rd in her seat. She just dropped out to support the left. She said, about why she's maneuvering to block the far-right: "Defeats happen, but you can never recover from dishonor."

People will just say anything to a scientist. “All the fish in the Pacific Ocean are dead because of radiation.” No they aren’t. That isn’t true.
I should just never tell people I'm a scientist! Him: Oh you're a scientist? Me: Yeah! 😃 Him: Do you know anything about RF? Me: Quite a lot actually! 😁 Him: So do you think the us government can use home smart meters and cell phone towers to harm political dissidents with RF waves? Me: ... No. 🙁

My goal for getting through hard times is to wring every ounce of pleasure out of what is ridiculous. There are so, so many ridiculous things in life. Someone posted a photo of a pregnant squirrel. I laughed for five minutes. Look at her.

Like the core issue here is a catastrophic global cortisol surplus.
After a long day of work, looking at my glowing rectangle, I like to unwind by coming home and looking at a different glowing rectangle. Wonder whether it’s like this. After getting mad about weighty consequential things all day, people like to unwind by getting mad about totally trivial things.

NFL just lost their antitrust trial. The jury ordered them to pay $4 billion in damages to the consumer class, which is tripled to $12 billion. One of the jurors is an astrophysicist. They requested a bunch of data that wasn’t in evidence. Judge suggested they were devising their own damages model!

The biggest culture shock I got while traveling in Japan was the abundance of free, clean public restrooms available outside a retail context. You can just … be a human being in a body, even when you’re out walking around.
in ann arbor (michigan) they're doing a pilot program where they pay a tech company $500,000 to put out fancy portable toilets that require a smartphone to scan a QR code to access

Growing up in VA we were taught to despise MD drivers. They still seem very bad, but I don’t know now whether that’s the social conditioning or just objectively the way of things.
My nuanced opinion is that Maryland drivers are worse overall but Boston drivers are worse for pedestrians and cyclists
