My wife and I live in MoCo and we never vote for school board because we don't have kids.... But this year we did to keep this lunatic off the school board.

As also MoCo childfree, always vote for school board if you have civic values you want to preserve. The crazies rely on voter suppression through apathy and ignorance. Multiple anti-LGBT candidates this cycle, not just the national profile one; prior years lately have had segregation fights.

We had an "Education not Indoctrination" slate last year in Frederick County that lost thanks to a lot of hard work by local teachers and staff.

Falls Church. Northern Virginia.

Fun fact about Falls Church, it was made into its own county (along with many other cities in Northern Virginia) after Brown V Board so that it could continue to practice racial segregation.

What is interesting too is that after that it ended up being the second district to integrate its schools. Of course they had drawn the city lines to exclude non-whites, so then number of students was not very high.

Reminds me of when Falwell admitted 1 Black person to Liberty university, but only on the condition they also were employed there. And then that person quit after a week.

The ones we have in NYC were the harbingers - they got started when they realized the city was taking segregation seriously - before Covid activated the rest of the cretins.

Yes. The reason that "Fairfax City" is considered an independent county of Fairfax County, is as an attempted loophole around integration. VA la allowed cities to be independent but with integration it was used to make "independent school districts" that simply had no Blacks to integrate.

It’s weird. A handful of cities did it back in the 50s or so, but others existed beforehand. To be a “City” it means you operate financially separate from the surrounding county (or counties)

Voted, no line, and afterwards told some UMCP student asking about that specific Bo of Ed race that it was delightful to vote for Laura Stewart , a community leader who’s pushed back on bigots.

Hurray for the teachers union apple ballot, which made voting for the non bigots even easier.

I got mine at my polling place (which granted is a big one) but you can also Google MoCo teachers union apple ballot. For #transit, when the County Council and state legislature are at stake, there’s the indispensable @actfortransit scorecard.

Voted all apple ballot candidates , which happily are supported by my Board of Ed knowledgeable friends.

I also think Laura Stewart will be good - hope she wins but I will be ok as long as it's not Mandel

Same, tho Stewart’s leadership against Proud Boy violence has been exemplary, as far as I can tell.

Perturbed that one of the Hate Slate candidates came in #2, thus snagging a spot on the November ballot. At least it’s not Mandel.

I really did not enjoy the idea that she is in a primary with only an incumbent/challenger with Apple/Progressive endorsements. How many people might actually support her, Don? Like are we going to have to organize a write-in starting Wednesday? (I don’t mean you and me, although I would help).
