But I thought climate change was a future problem. You mean we have to deal with catastrophic weather? Not just some vague "future generations"? Us!? Now?! But the oil industry paid politicians and pundits to tell us all is fine [for us, anyway... who cares about "someday" problems].
Hurricane Beryl is now a “potentially catastrophic” Category 5 hurricane, the earliest ever to reach that strength in the Atlantic. Grenada and the nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines were reeling from a storm that probably will be the region’s most intense hurricane on record.
Hurricane Beryl at Category 5 strength after making landfall in Caribbeanwww.washingtonpost.com Beryl shattered records as it strengthened in unusually warm waters, churning through Grenada’s Carriacou. It was predicted to skirt Jamaica on Wednesday.

The institutions of US democracy are hanging by a thread, and the Supreme Court just frayed it. I cannot emphasize this enough: the 2024 election is effectively an up-or-down vote on Constitutional democracy. All else is secondary, because democracy and rule of law are how we address other issues.
The Institutions of American Democracy are Hanging by a Threadwww.arcdigital.media Trump has brought the United States further down the path of democratic backsliding than many realize. The election is the only barrier left.

Jackson is reading from her dissent — meaning all three Democratic appointees have read from their dissent in one of the big administrative law cases decided over the past week, a clear attempt to highlight the importance of these decisions. (Not that SCOTUS lets you hear.)

I wrote about Snyder v US, and how the Supreme Court yesterday legalized vast swaths of corruption for state and local officials of the kind that just happens to look a lot like their own personal conduct. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

One of the biggest legacies of the Trump presidency is nuclear proliferation. Lied that North Korea no longer posed a nuclear threat and did PR for Kim Jong-un. Let Iran out of nuclear restrictions in exchange for nothing. Bush and Obama had the world united against both.

The modern Right will absolutely destroy the lives of thousands of harmless children for a drop of political power. They know that hate and fear are powerful and gleefully cultivate them.
stories like this give the lie to the idea that the right is interested in protecting these children. per their own narrative, this girl is a victim of “gender ideology” or whatever. but the reaction from the right is always hostility, ostracization and violence.
Mom of transgender girl athlete says Florida's investigation has destroyed her daughter's lifewww.yahoo.com A Florida public school employee who faces firing because she allowed her transgender daughter to play girls high school volleyball assailed those who outed her child, saying Tuesday that the ensuing ...

Fun fact: Both Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott have signed laws forbidding municipalities in their states from requiring companies to give heat/water breaks to people who have to work outside. Other fun fact: Today it will be 95 in St. Petersburg and 106 in Presidio, TX.
Service sector workers in Atlanta, Charleston, and Durham will rally today to demand relief from excessive heat at work

Bump stocks increase an AR-15's rate of fire from 180 rounds per minute to 400-800 rounds per minute. They inflict mass carnage by allowing the gunman to shoot automatically, without pulling the trigger. Yet the Supreme Court declares that they do not create a "machinegun."

US Income Tax Revenue: $2.2 trillion US Imports: $3.8 trillion This would be a $1 trillion annual handout to the top 1%, paid for by massive inflation in consumer goods, something like 55%-60%. Breaking the economy to give the richest even more, that's the Republican way.
Trump floats eliminating U.S. income tax and replacing it with tariffs on importswww.cnbc.com Trump also talked about using tariffs to leverage negotiating power over bad actors, a source told CNBC.

Me in December when SCOTUS took the abortion pill case:
The Supreme Court took another abortion case, but the real threat is the media narrative. SCOTUS will likely swat the sham lawsuit away on standing grounds, earning it headlines about “protecting abortion.” But it won’t change the fact that a GOP president could still enact a national ban in 2025
Abortion Access Will, Once Again, Be Decided by the Supreme Courtjezebel.com Experts think SCOTUS will rule against a challenge to mifepristone—which could trick voters into believing they “protected abortion” in a crucial election year.

This will be held up as "SCOTUS isn't political," which overlooks how the case was outrageous and absurd in the first place. Kacsmaryk and the 5th Circuit brazenly violated basic principles of standing taught to every 1L. It shouldn't have made it this far.
First SCOTUS decision of the day is the mifepristone case! SCOTUS unanimous (by J. Kavanaugh) holds that the doctor's group challenging the 2000, 2019, and 2021 FDA approvals lack standing. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23p...

Even worse, an activist who clearly wants America to become a "Christian theocracy" infiltrated the actual Supreme Court itself, disguised as a justice and everything.
