1) Jacobin asshole saying Trump governed as a “bog standard Republican” is pretty laughable 2) Actually bog standard republicans are pretty fucking bad

*checks in on how it's going with bog standard republican leadership in texas*
Avatar
*Jacobin historian voice* bog standard republicans for ages have attempted to overthrow every election they lost.

i feel like a jacobin byline at this point should be a resume-into-the-trash sort of filter

I can think of a couple. Brooks Brothers in 2000, plus interventions in foreign policy vis a vis Vietnam and the Iran hostage crisis. Not quite overthrowing, but certainly getting hostile foreign powers to intervene.

Then see, Jan 6 was just part of a storied American tradition and not actually bad at all.

And Florida, Ohio....

oh are they doing the "trump was fine, actually" thing now
Avatar
Every time leftists go “liberals are doing x” *they* end up doing it.
Avatar
This was the endpoint of “saying Trump is worse than Bush is rehabilitating Bush.”
Avatar
I'm worried we already did the same for David Frum
Avatar
Yup. The left: "The liberals are going to rehabilitate Trump!" Meanwhile, also the left: "Trump wasn't so bad, really..."
Avatar
Ironic that it was a strain of thought on the left that it would be liberals who go on to normalize Trump
Avatar
what do these assholes actually want? do they want things to be better for people or what?
Avatar
They want to be proven right that the libs got it wrong.
Avatar
They want libs to suffer and lose and that's pretty much it.

The key to all of Bessner's downplaying is that he once co-authored a column that said that admitting Trumpism is fascism would mean that the left should ally itself groups outside the left in order to stop it. And that, apparently, would be a step too far for him.
Avatar
The popular front against fascism in the 1930s and 1940s was…a bad thing? Is that what this freak is saying?
Avatar
If all I have to do to beat fascists is deemphasize my ideology, consider it deemphasized.
Avatar
Right, like, time enough for that when society has been salvaged.
Avatar
How fucking dare anyone call themselves anti fascist if they can’t make common cause in the short term with everyone else who opposes a genuine looming threat of fascism?

Voted for McCain? Don’t care. Please join. Voted for Romney? Don’t care. Please join. Voted for George W? Don’t care. Please join. Voted for Stein? Don’t care. Please join. Voted for…DO NOT CARE. PLEASE JOIN.

"But Biden didn't do *exactly* what I want in exactly the way I wanted on my *one issue* and don't tell me what he did on other issues or who he's going to protect or shame me into voting for him or...ad nauseum."

Avatar
I'll be charitable and say that I don't think that's what he meant to say. But it can be certainly read that way.
Avatar
I think you’re right but also that what he did mean to say — which is nearly as bad — is that it would be so inconvenient for him to admit that trump is a fascist that he’ll just ignore it.
Avatar
Oh, I 100% believe that's what he was saying. Just in a way that didn't put it quite as bluntly as that.
Avatar
Oh Jesus, he pals around with the Quincy Institute, cause of course he does.
Avatar
And a perennial nominee for the Ernst Thälmann award for real-time history-understanding.
Avatar
Jacobin, Quincy, and on top of that he’s a fuckin’ -Husky-.

Omfg it's almost like he doesn't know what the vice president is there for

"As a *real* leftist, I want the most leftist policies, or failing that, bog standard Republican policies will do"

Jacobin writers stop trying to make your GOP Daddies love you challenge.

There should be a class action suit on behalf of every student that ever had to listen to a word out of this dude's mouth.

Ah, so…maybe Jacobin really is a CIA op?
