There has been a lot of talk on this website about polls (generally not good for Biden, but not, like, something a candidate can’t recover from) and also about other factors favoring Biden, eg fundraising, economic fundamentals. Not as much talk about the 538 model that says it’s a complete tie:

A lot of people are mad at Biden for his response to the question about how he’ll feel if he loses to trump. How are people trying to replace him going to feel if they get another candidate, and that person loses?

A little unfortunate that the reasonable response to doomer assholes like Max Berger telling you the US election is already over is “France, biyatch”, but I accept.

NYT says their performance on Threads today was an aberration, & not indicative of deeper problems they've had with social media. Unfortunately, that hasn't satisfied many observers whose concerns are growing louder. The stakes are too high. For the good of the news, the Times should step aside

I consider what Chris Murphy said to be quite reasonable.

Thanks largely to Biden and the Democratic party there is now a kind of global race to get to the mass, chear carbon-free energy. We're going to hit peak global emissions (fingers crossed) this year or next. We're deploying solar at a level that blowing away every single prediction.

For the record I thought Stephanopoulos was fair and professional, and didn’t do anything wrong. It’s just clear that he was told only to ask many different versions “why aren’t you quitting” rather than anything about policy. I don’t think that was his fault, it was just a dumb editorial decision.

If this is true (and I fear it is) it is also very anti-democratic (with a little d) since he won the primary.
This is exactly right. The media isn’t driving the news about the party replacing Biden. There is a very real, very strong effort within the party to replace Biden—and that’s driving the coverage.

The problem we have, which is very real, is that: - Biden won the primary in a landslide, and is competent, so he is going to be the nominee unless he steps down, which is completely his choice - Others want to pressure him to make that choice, by complaining to the media (1/2)

Ok so the snippets that have come out so far don’t really tell us anything. The interview is apparently between 20 and 25 minutes, which makes sense if it’s going to be a 30 minute program.

One potentially funny outcome would be if the Biden campaign gets tons of free advertising like Trump has in the past, bc the news networks show all of his campaign speeches in their entirety to check whether he is still capable of giving a speech.

Anyway, I just called Casey’s and Fetterman’s offices and left messages that I’m pretty sure i can count on them not do try to force the president to do anything that’s not 100% his own choice because they’re not fucking morons trying to tear the party apart.

It's different because it was MUCH later in the campaign, but FWIW, 24 representatives, 15 senators, and 7 governors said they wouldn't vote for Trump or called on him to get out after the Access Hollywood tape in 2016. Obviously, he stayed in. www.usatoday.com/story/news/p...

my hot take is that the president should be and live like a normal human, and so I reject the premise that the president must work 130 hour weeks and never be well-rested. he has dozens of staffers who can cover shifts!
I think that maybe the President should be well rested and sleep more if he's making dozens of critical decisions each day. Believe it or not, he has a few staffers who can wake him up if needed.

one of the most cowardly arguments i keep seeing from columnists is that nothing breaks through with trump supporters, so it’s a waste of time reporting on what he believes. this should be seen as a critically damning failure on behalf of the fourth estate. this means you failed. it’s not a pass.

If you can make the other side start eating themselves, all kinds of incredible things are possible. That’s a solid lesson.
I’ve been doing normal American things so correct me if I’m wrong but it sure seems like Reform and the Torries are splitting a lot of votes which is why Labor is feasting? Am I wrong here?

Really worthwhile to listen to this (this is the link for hour 2) if you want to check on Biden's abilities. He gives informed, detailed answers. He misspeaks sometimes. He's a little mumbly. *If he can keep that up,* there's every reason to believe he's still fit to campaign & serve.

This is completely reasonable and what Biden should say. He needs to demonstrate his fitness , starting with the interview Friday. He should also schedule townhall type events. Now let him try to do that and judge him with an open mind. The election is not tomorrow.
Breaking news: President Biden and his senior team said they accepted the grim ultimatum they’ve been hearing from almost all quarters of the Democratic Party — to demonstrate his fitness for office or face a significant effort to force him to step aside.
Biden and aides concede he needs to quickly demonstrate his fitness for officewww.washingtonpost.com Critics have been shaken by his relative inaction to directly address the panic ignited by his halting debate performance last Thursday.

I watched Biden do the Medal of Honor thing and he was fine. I understand that people are concerned w how he’ll handle being challenged and thinking on his feet. But he’s literally doing an interview on Friday. People calling for him to resign need to let that happen, and assess it honestly.
