It's incredibly sad that we've all lost out on such a vital and effective self-promo tool, but simultaneously, it's validating to know that, no, it's not just me. Twitter/X is utterly useless, now. Broken beyond repair. boringstorybook.com/break-up-wit...
Break up with your X. – INCREDIBLY BORING STORIESboringstorybook.com

The conclusion of this analysis is "Loudly migrate to Bluesky, Post about it w/images and links," and while I know it's not the same here, it's definitely better than Twitter currently is. Like, you literally couldn't do worse.

Don't get married to your follower count, don't fall into the "But I have TEN THOUSAND followers on Twitter and 1,500 here!" trap. The headcount means nothing if the accounts are abandoned or bots. And all the data says that's exactly what they are.

Marketing 101: a wide top of your funnel isn't worth shit if they don't lead to sales. Half of my job doing adwords back in 2012 was A/B testing ad copy and the other half was pruning underperforming keywords.

Not all, but certainly a much larger proportion. Here is a normalized analysis.
Normalized responses -- the total number of likes and shares, divided by number of followers -- were highest here (yay!) and lowest on X.

One thing I’ve noticed about Twitter lately, in the past month or so, is the rate of spam/scam follows has stepped up by a huge factor, maybe 10x? (N=1) Like going from picking up several a week to several a day. It could all be from a small set of botnets, too
Avatar
yeah i drop a post on X occasionally and it's just fucking dead over there
Avatar
Yep. This account has a whopping 44 followers, and kww.bsky.social has maybe twice that -- but they actually follow and respond. Much better than the hundreds that don't seem to actually exist
Avatar
Also, don’t forget Twitter actively and aggressively suppresses posts from those of us who are critics of the god Elon.
Avatar
I have like twice the followers on twitter (not that it means much anyway) but Twitter is such a hell site. Bluesky has better vibes. That's what I'm here for
Avatar
i just miss what we had. bluesky feels different but i think i just have a different set of friends here and they arent as active.
Avatar
I made some poster and 3D model sales on Twitter recently but I think I’m coming to the conclusion it’s really not worth the trouble promoting there when the vibes are as bad as they currently are
Avatar
My mains social network these days is Spoutible which has a nice cross-post feature to Bluesky. I expect they will add more of those likeThreads. I.e. targeting several platform with one post.
Avatar
you do mastodon at all? i see the same interactions as golden age twitter with 1/5 the followers.
Avatar
Clicked through to the example links of publishers on Twitter. Saw Penguin announce a new Bluey kids' book. Had 1 repost and 2 likes. On a Bluey book.
Avatar
Right!?! All the posts for HUGELY POPULAR things get less than ten engagements. And an agency with 9k followers and a media company with 250k engagements all get roughly the same <10 engagements.
Avatar
"The accounts created on X still exist, but most account owners have stopped regularly using them." I see a lot of posts here from people who don't use Twitter anymore but have not deleted their accounts because they don't want someone else to start using their names.
Avatar
Avatar
I suggest people who bail and don't delete their Twitter accounts - for this reason or whatever reason- go private and lock it. The idiot in charge does delete unused accounts (I don't know what defines 'unused') And there are so many bots with names. Lock your old account by going private.

I'm in the process moving over here from Twitter. I really only use Twitter now for group direct messaging. When BlueSky gets group messaging I am totally off Twitter and my exit is going to be spectacular.
Avatar
Discord is great for group direct messaging…
Avatar
Remember when Muskmelon talked about getting rid of the bots?
Avatar
I popped over there during the presidential debate because it used to be fun/informative to follow people's livetweets. That brainworm Kennedy guy had paid to have a stream of himself talking to the TV promoted over the actual debate, and the top trending debate hashtag misspelled "election."
Avatar
I check it out daily. Or, I still use it There are a lot of mutuals on here who post the same stuff on both. (That seems excessive, but, some are self-promoting so I guess it covers bases) And I have mutuals on this site who haven't used this in months It is a bit more than 'many bailed twitter'
Avatar
This is such a great analogy
Search has been ruined on Twitter (once it's best feature). The number of right wing evil individuals is out of control on the platform. Community notes and moderation is directly controlled by a fascist.
Avatar
My god those absolutely inane AI “pitches”
Avatar
Actually a bit of a relief to find out that getting banned over there didn't really make much of an impact.
Avatar
I’ve noticed reach cratering for promotion of local organizing/news/events. Completely fucked compared to a couple years ago. Facebook even worse.
Avatar
And WE KNOW WHO BROKE IT. Only someone who is damaged goods could break something so quickly and with such recklessness. He is a spoiled, self-centered, wholly undisciplined brat, who’s been told he’s brilliant when in fact he’s likely only above average.

Watching an older TV series and they mention MySpace a lot. I miss MySpace. It was perfection for me. Did everything I needed. I want it back.
Avatar
When I finally made a MySpace, all my friends moved to Facebook, so I never joined there out of spite. I only joined Twitter to shout at a particular Dateline episode, and ended up building a nice community there. Until... Which is all to say I would like to revert back to MySpace, as well.

Yeah, Xitter is done. Back in February I posted a tweet with cool photos from a bike ride I just did. It got ONE whole like. Similar tweets used to get about ten likes and people would reply and comment on them. Folks are just GONE, myself included. I only keep my account for its history.

When I first heard Elroy was going to buy Twitter my decision to leave the platform was made. The day he posted the "should we bring back Donald Trump" poll, my suspicions about what was going to happen to the platform or confirmed, and I was gone. Elroy wrecked a good thing that cannot be replaced
Avatar
Yes. I need to get the hell off of there.
Avatar
I also abandoned my twitter account, I check in there every three or four months but the interface always seems to be broken, lots of spinning and waiting for anything to load in, so I just leave.
Avatar
Great article and I couldn't agree more.
Avatar
I am angstily informed by "a writer" that they "cannot 'simply stop using Twitter'" because their "livelihood depends upon it" in the most obnoxious terms possible, however.
Avatar
So I recently discovered that even a largely ignored Reddit post gives me more than 500% the return than Twitter. Twitter is just dead unless you're paying them and bot baiting now, it's so sad. Hell, I have 100 followers here on Bsky and I get the same clickthrough to my patreon as 1k Twitter.
Avatar
I took a month off Twitter not too long after EM took over because of how negative it seemed. I really missed it and was relieved to get back on. When I did, it wasn't worse than before I left, but the halo of previous positivity had faded. That's when I deleted my account permanently.
Avatar
I’m like a broken record for saying this but I deactivated my account the day it allowed Hatie Kopkins back on. Fuck Twitter. Haven’t looked back.
Avatar
I deactivated the minute I saw the X logo because it seemed pretty clear what was coming next. I thought the stupidity of using X as a brand when you had an appealing, likeable, and well-recognized brand already was bad enough, but what's happened to the site since then is incredible.
Avatar
Musk turned it into a right-wing cesspool.
Avatar
Thanks for this. I’ve shared it in a place it needs to be seen.
Avatar
Yeap, the main reason why i haven't nuked my twiddy account entirely is because i'd like for people to be able to browse through the art on there. I'm not really in it for the numbers, but it IS very notable that people are actually reacting to me here despite me having <100 followers. :V
Avatar
Shocked that SMMs haven't drafted a class action yet...
Avatar
Yeah, I took a jaunt through my Twitter followers a while back, and of the ~300, only about 75 had posted anything in the last year.
Avatar
On Twitter, I only had 14 followers. But here, I'm up to 23! :)
