Fact — British Columbia just created equivalency for medical, legal and other professional qualifications held by immigrants. So if you’re a doctor from anywhere you don’t have to be a taxi driver in BC, you can be a doctor.
Opinion - Once the envy of the world, Canada’s immigration system now lays dismantled: The government’s ill-advised preoccupation with shortages in low-skill labour markets is resulting in the dismantling of Canada’s skilled immigration system

let this serve as my occasional reminder that even if you think the NYT is consistently outstanding, subscribing to the times to "support journalism" is like giving Harvard thirty bucks to "support education." They don't need your money. Small outlets & independent journalists do.
WaPo and NYT subscriptions gone. 😕As someone who has spent the last 15 years begging people to subscribe to newspapers, it was so hard to pull the trigger. But gonna subscribe to more newsletters and independent outlets. I hope WaPo and NYT earn my subscription back some day.

Cynicism is a popular form of complacency.
I don't get it when people point out that Project 2025 is "nothing new." Yes, obviously, right-wingers have been fanatics for decades. They were blowing up abortion clinics and shooting doctors when I was a kid. But, as you may have noticed, their political vision has kind of been coming together.

Current moment reminds me a lot of the dotcom era, where investor money chased web and telecom companies while the *real* technological revolution was happening quietly in the background in the form of LCD/LED displays and lithium ion batteries (converging dramatically on the iPhone)

The Black Panther Party learned that sickle cell anemia was a neglected genetic disease affecting mostly people of African descent. Although disease had been known since 1910, it attracted little govt attention and even less funding. So the Panthers set up a screening program. #BlackSky #Disability
"Approximately 1 in 365 African American children are born with sickle cell, according to the CDC.. Tens of thousands of lower-income families with children suffering from sickle cell disease have applied for SSI. But roughly 76% of those applicants had their requests denied between 2015 and 2020."
Thousands of Black children with sickle cell disease struggle to access disability paymentswww.cbsnews.com New data show how one federal safety net program has been out of reach for thousands of children who need it most.

I know they get rolled all the time but for the Times to get rolled by “actually they just want to reclaim the values of Western civilization as they see it … with larger families and fewer immigrants” is the Times putting the 14 words in the paper

“You don’t accomplish anything by posting” is such a ridiculous & boring take. I have learned so much from so many people on social media just from them posting. I have shared that information with others. We have changed our behaviors based on information to impact communities & ourselves.

and then somehow for whatever surely unrelated reason she was absolutely pilloried in a million different articles for being mean to poor dear sweet innocent Sarah Huckabee Sanders and forced to apologize even though nothing she said about her was untrue or even THAT harsh
Just a reminder that Michelle Wolf nailed it at the White House Correspondents Dinner. NYT, I’m looking in your direction especially.

They are hiding it from us on purpose. What does that suggest?
This just infuriates me. The risk of Covid may well be rising but lack of reporting disguises that fact. With a disease this dangerous and deadly, what possesses the government, state and federal, to stop reporting incidence of the disease. www.ctinsider.com/connecticut/...
A lack of data may be hiding a summer COVID wave in CT: 'There is an ostriching that is going on'www.ctinsider.com With a lack of statewide testing data now, a wave of COVID infections may be hitting CT and many may not realize it until there's a surge in hospitalizations.

People who believe nothing you post has impact- have no idea how to use a platform & they may also have an interest in discouraging you from speaking out. Online activism matters. Look at what they did to Twitter. Twitter was previously one of the most important communication tools on the planet.

One day after AI is abandoned they’re absolutely going to tout cutting their emissions by half/a third without acknowledging they were pumping out more than ever chasing a pump and dump plagiarism scheme
Google’s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoft’s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.

yes, we boiled the planet, but it was worth it to make a machine that, instead of adding two plus two, takes the statistical average of every answer to questions containing "what" "is" "two" and "plus" from a database of illegal cell phone transcripts and returns a fake nude pic of a high schooler

There's another key attribute of hope that doesn't get mentioned much. Hope fights. Even when victory seems unlikely—especially then—hope fights. We should be hopeful people. Full essay: www.the-reframe.com/a-fools-hope/
