This is really bad. This is in Fortune and reports the most recent analysis on methane emissions from oil and gas companies by the company Kayrros. Actual emissions are SIXTEEN times worse than those reported by the industry.

Remember, if the government can obtain a conviction against Bob Menendez for taking bribes and stuffing gold bars into his closet that he was given for working on behalf of a foreign government, there's nothing stopping them from indicting you for the same thing.

Saw someone’s take is “Bouie not being here won’t make or break” this site. I am happy to say some things about how platform migration works. It’s true, one user never makes or breaks anything, but for U.S. users the presence of young Black folks has driven the popularity of new tech for decades 1/?

It’s finally here! For years, @roseveleth.com has been working on an epic series about elite runners who’ve been told they can no longer race as women, because of their biology. TESTED is their story, & the story of sport’s history of dubious sex testing. Ep 1 is now online! link.chtbl.com/Rose_
Testedlink.chtbl.com <p>Who gets to compete? Since the beginning of women’s sports, there has been a struggle over who qualifies for the women’s category. Tested follows the unfolding story of elite female ...

I've read exactly that same thing two hundred times; it's a philosophical question whether it counts as *more* credulous the 201st time they try it or whether they already hit absolute credulousness at his first inaugural address, or at his 2016 RNC acceptance speech
I have never read anything more credulous than Axios’s thing about Trump this morning. Like…

Let's not mince words - JD Vance is a racist, un-American asshole. The idea of America has never been honored uniformly in the breach, but it is still strong enough to inspire millions to risk everything for its promise. And that's infinitely stronger than his hateful little mind.
I oppose this worldview—this theory of America—with every fiber of my being.

The first episode of TESTED comes out tomorrow! I feel like I'm gonna hurl. This is the culmination of eight years of pitching. Twenty six outlets said no, before the CBC finally said yes (and then NPR later joined them). You can listen here: link.chtbl.com/Rose_

I can’t believe a deeply polarizing political figure who loves action movies and grandiose gestures and who seems to be protected by an absolute huge maze of Faustian bargains around his entire being managed to swing an act of violence to his apparent political advantage. Must be a conspiracy

Reminder that 2024 is effectively the first post-social media election. People used to get their news from the tv and newspaper. Then we had a decade of news-via-google. Then a decade of news-via-big-social-feeds. Now that’s been fractured and nothing has replaced it.

Organizations use marginalized folks, and their work, to provide cover for their shitty practices all the time. In some fields, it's almost a condition of employment. For example, in higher education, I had to offer up the "gift" of my Blackness to the institution as a condition of employment.

I live in a red county in a red state where Dems have not been able to meaningfully contest races for decades. This year, it's changing thanks to gun safety, abortion, & a school voucher scheme. Really hard to overstate how many voters are excited to have a choice, & how mad they are at the GOP.
Block walked for a local candidate this morning. Even in the 90+ degree heat, it feels great to get out & do something tangible, talk to voters who are eager for change, & participate in our democracy. 10/10 recommend, will do again & you should, too. Or sign up to make calls & send texts!

No congestion pricing. No new bus lanes. Bike lane projects worked on for years, then canceled. Now outdoor dining is more or less on the way out. In terms of making a city a city or even fighting climate change, everything is headed in the wrong direction under our state and city leadership.

Making New York's outdoor dining program seasonal has essentially killed one of the few good things to come out of the pandemic and now everything will revert to parking: "...only 23 [restaurants] have public hearings scheduled so far to move forward, according to city records."
Roadway Dining May See Dramatic Decline Under Eric Adams As Deadline Looms - Streetsblog New York Citynyc.streetsblog.org New York City may see a steep drop in restaurants offering roadway outdoor dining, with just 23 eateries currently lined up to do so.

back in the '80s the hardcore scene in boston was this super vibrant thing, tons of bands, tons of DIY shows, a real commitment to inclusiveness, very much kind of a straightedge scene. it kind of spilled over to a broader punky (and maybe not maximally diverse) music scene (con't)

This is something I think about all the time but it seems particularly relevant today: Virtually no one understands the distinction between newspapers' news sections and their opinion sections (which is honestly a big problem for newspapers' credibility)

In fact, the only people who get rich criticizing tech are… ex-FAANG tech bros who pretend to have become critical while not actually interrogating power or abuses at all, or right-wing grifters who profit from the same vice-signaling that works in all fascist media. Everyone else gets crushed.
Avatar
Man, I don’t have all the answers. We’re all running moral triage right now. There are a million ways we’re all technically complicit in The Horrors, so you’ve just gotta stick to the people who mostly share your values and fight like hell against those who lust for oppression. I’m trying!

It's all so self-defeating, and will accelerate this place dying on the vine. Bouie's among the handful of brilliant columnists fighting the good fight at major outlets. (One could argue that he's the best of his generation.) Don't drive him off for having the audacity to interact with you!
The effort to “cancel” @jbouie.bsky.social on here is probably going to go about as well as the effort to “cancel” dril. What a pointless, joyless fight to have.

So…I’m currently writing a book about Black mediamakers and US democracy. I have interviewed many inc. current+former employees of you know where. I’ve done years of research. I just want to say: you have no f-ing idea from the outside the fight these folks are fighting to try to save you chill out

Musk is a monster. All the people who work on this system are monsters. The regulators who have just let it slide are monsters.
A Tesla in full-self driving mode hit my twin today. The driver was not aware, did not have his hands on the wheel, and did not brake. He hit this mother of 2 going 30 mph before blaming it on FSD getting confused by a train and driving off, as if that explained everything. So now, it's personal.

Oh come on. “I was a well-paid lobbyist at an organization set up to advocate for the interests of big tech. I didn’t spew their talking points though!” I’m sure you didn’t. You were well-paid because you understood what points you were supposed to make. That’s how it works. Tech ain’t special.
