Judge Glanville issues an order to show cause to *every person* who attended the ex parte meeting in the Young Thug case, asking them why he shouldn't find them all in contempt for snitching
Avatar
On reflection, I think @questauthority.bsky.social is probably right that the order is written to exclude chambers staff (including court reporter), even as it includes court security staff. (I'm not sufficiently familiar with this specialized use of the phrase "to include.")
Avatar
Oh I think it includes court staff, it's just he doesn't have to specifically include them because (a) he's probably going to examine them ex parte (ha!) and (b) they don't need a court order to force them to show up; they'll lose their jobs if they don't.
Avatar
Does the order as written include himself?
Avatar
Oh good. I was thinking I had to go to this because I was hiding in the closet that morning, but now I see I wasn't to included.

My threat to hold everyone at the perfectly okay secret meeting in contempt is answering a lot of the questions asked about the perfectly okay secret meeting.

Adding to the record that he did something he really shouldn't have in as many ways as possible.... almost impressive. Almost.

Is this quadrupling down on his awful decision to hold the ex parte meeting in the first place? Give him a backhoe he’s digging deeper! @questauthority.bsky.social @kathryntewson.bsky.social

I learned in 2nd grade - the key to this is say nothing. admit nothing. stare at your feet.

"Your honor, none of us leaked. I move that your honor himself, is the leaker. And that his motive was because he is batshit crazy."

Countdown to when we find out Glanville butt-dialed counsel during the meeting and it’s all on Steel’s voicemail.

Time hold AT&T in contempt. Probably Apple too.
Avatar
Judge Glanville feels like he’s getting himself into one of these situations, where he holds everyone in contempt who asks him why he’s holding people in contempt.

I really did not need the reminder that I started reading Girl Genius in high school.

Heck, did a deep cut to a 52-year-old comic not long ago… bsky.app/profile/shou...
So I wasn’t the only one who heard Zonker’s mother screaming in my head “I want McCloskey! I want McCloskey! Do you hear me? McCloskey!”

I haven't detected the distinctive burning odor of a mandamus this strong since Manny Real left the bench.

judge might even be in the right here holding a secret meeting, i have no idea but it looks really really bad to a layperson like myself
Avatar
It's not right, it's very wrong.
Avatar
No, judges hold secret meetings all the time! It's legal, lawful and the judge is "the judge" for a reason.
Avatar
Avatar
The utterly insane part of Judge Glanville’s show cause order is that normally when some is ordered to show cause why they shouldn’t be held in contempt, they’ve already been informed of *why* they might be held in contempt.

We go now to a live view of the OSC hearing

I love that O’Brien and Bashir are in this image.

I think this was a DS9 episode when they went back in time or something.

I think the alt text might be wrong. This is from DS9 which used footage from the Trouble with Tribbles TOS episode.

Yes! I don't know anything about legal stuff but I do know my DS9. I'm just happy to be here.
Avatar
Yeah, I have no idea about the significance of this order, judge, etc. But tribbles are bad news.
Avatar
Things you do when you definitely know who leaked the substance of the meeting. (The judge earlier said while attacking Brian Steel that he - the judge - had a pretty good idea of who spilled the beans. This show cause order implies he actually has no idea.)
Avatar
He at least knows who he's gonna blame
Avatar
On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being totally normal and 10 being "please welcome Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Aileen Cannon," how unusual is this?
Avatar
What stops a judge from doing this? Who even handles such a situation?
Avatar
This is the legal equivalent of The Caine Mutiny, apparently :)

We're well beyond the traditional shores of error so grave as to result in a mistrial. But I still think it's worth pointing out that 2x Jeopardy has, in fact, attached to these defendants! At this point, J. Glanville may well be the best legal advocate for YT's defense.
Avatar
Don’t you mean jeopardy has attached? Double jeopardy only attaches if they attempt to try them again, doesn’t it?

Accurate & pedantic! You're a man after my own heart. If you were in Dallas, I would reward you with a box of these pencils I keep for nerds like us. I have a stash of them.

Too bad I’m only in Arlington.
Avatar
And, there goes jeopardy. What a crazy jurisdiction. bsky.app/profile/nobo...
If you request the mistrial, you waive double jeopardy unless you can show the state deliberately provoked the mistrial. That's a trial court decision that gets a lot of deference and most judges won't make it against the state.

I sometimes wonder if GA, rather than base their jurisprudence on the common law tradition, decided to important North Korea's legal system. @nobodyinteresting.bsky.social, can you clarify this for us?

this seems really out of the norm - do you think this judge will face any consequences?
