As a Probation Officer, this makes me endlessly happy and optimistic. Years and years of 'lock em all up' policies without a single thought for how we keep people from going back to prison, or what we do when the prisons are full. Very smart appointment. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Granted I’m a big prisons nerd, but still, it’s been a whole day, and I’m really surprised at how happy this has made me. A day on and I’m elated by it. (Timpson was also chair of the Prison Reform Trust.)
For those who don't know: this is James Timpson of Timpson key cutters/shoe repairs/dry cleaners. His company employs ex-convicts and even runs work training programmes in prisons. Genuinely inspired choice.

Morning, Bluesky. Labour’s first Cabinet meeting is underway with a Starmer press conference afterwards. One interesting factor for me is three experts who were given ministerial jobs: Covid star Sir Patrick Vallance as Science minister, James Timpson at Prisons and Richard Hermer attorney general.

Everything we’ve seen suggests the exit poll is underestimating the scale of Labour and Liberal Democrat gains and electoral efficiency, and overestimating Reform and the Conservatives.

Two things: one, finishing above Tony Blair's 1997 haul is very much on as it stands. Two, and much more importantly, so too is Labour getting 420 seats.
Wildly extrapolating from Swindon South: better than projected by the exit poll, so thus far, all the results pointing to a bit better than the exit poll, a bit worse than the average of the MRPs for Labour.

An important thing to understand about the UK's exit poll is that it is really accurate for predicting, e.g. 'the Liberal Democrats will win around 60 seats' but it isn't designed to spit out the *right* 60 seats, so really don't spend anytime looking at what those are:

The most dismaying thing about those stupid election date bets is how petty it all is. Using your public role for a bit of personal advantage. Whenever you can . It's just grim.

Another of the great mysteries of Stonehenge. Why did Ladybird revise this book in circa 1965 - removing the horizontal stone? They thus changed the scene from historically correct to incorrect. Artist: John Kenney

I found the responses to yesterday's @nora.zone prompt asking people to share facts about their job or hobby so interesting that I took them up on their custom feed idea. Do yourself a favor and check it out. You won't regret it.

If you see a ribbon on a horse’s tail, it is not a decoration, it is communicating a message to you: red - beware, horse may kick so keep back; white - horse is for sale; green - youngster, may be first outing; pink - mare may be cranky or in heat. Yellow or blue - stallion (depends on country) 🐴
ok i have another quote tweet prompt. what's something, big or small, related to your job or hobby, that most people don't know that you would like to have them know? it can be a concept, a piece of history, some vocabulary, or something else.

Just on this point for people who still hold a grudge: parties change all the time. The party of Starmer is not the party of Corbyn. The party of Corbyn was not the party of Blair. The party of Truss was not the party of Major. And so on. And the party of Davey is clearly not the party of Clegg.
