A perfect illustration of the difference between justification and motivation. Saving money was how they justified the policy--how they persuaded voters to let them make this change. The real motivation was arguably to erode public institutions and bolster private ones. A much less palatable aim.

It's not illegal in any state to travel for an abortion, that's a good one too. Lots of people assume it is. You don't have to say you were "camping."

I have a lot about abortion, too: Current state laws don't explicitly criminalize self-managing an abortion. A medication abortion is not physically easier than a procedure. You can ovulate almost immediately after an abortion. Bleeding for 0-6 weeks after a medication abortion is totally normal.
okay it's time for a prompt post: respond to this post with a correction to a common misconception about something you know a lot about. if you feel like it, boost your response. (please use a kindly tone about it, otherwise i, your prompt curator, will get anxious.)

And remember, the Christian Right only took up abortion as a topic after they lost school segregation for good when the IRS went after Bob Jones’ U status, & needed a new issue to rally the troops. 1/x all our issues are intertwined. 🧵
The United States has always been a democracy for some and a brutal authoritarian regime for others, and the effort to expand it to democracy for all has led to a 70+ year backlash culminating in SCOTUS claiming that kings are totes cool and also judges are the ones to coronate them

After months of public outcry and pressure from the City Council, New York City’s libraries are poised to have their budgets fully restored so that branches may resume seven-day-a-week service, including Sundays. gothamist.com/news/nyc-lib...

I went to the this evaluation discussion—it was really astonishing to hear all the good news, not just in terms of integration but also academic outcomes and student/familiy stress levels. EVERY district should follow suit. Proud to be on this district's Community Education Council 💛
Actual good news! "Middle schools in a section of northwest Brooklyn that stretches from Sunset Park to Cobble Hill went from being the second most socioeconomically segregated to 19th out of the city’s 32 local districts. Teachers and students say friendships are emerging across income lines."
What Happened When Brooklyn Tried to Integrate Its Middle Schoolswww.nytimes.com A new report found that many schools enrolled more racially and socioeconomically diverse groups of students without sparking a major exodus of families from public schools.
