This is the very best kind of legacy.
To be earnest for a second, today I took my kid to the science museum and stumbled upon an interactive piece I helped create 13 years ago, for a different museum. It was so surreal and cool to have her learn about treaty rights from something I created before she was even born.

one of the best parts of following a bunch of smart people online is that periodically I will be trying to articulate a thought and then read a post that does it better than anything I could have come up with

leveraged private equity buyouts are every horrible excess of capitalism boiled down into one company-destroying nightmare and should be abolished by any functional society
Every article about Red Lobster filing for bankruptcy is "ha ha endless shrimp, what did they think would happen" and then buried ten paragraphs down is the usual:

a very unfortunate thing that you learn as a software engineer: "this should not possibly be able to happen" does not, in any way, mean that it won't

Brexit was probably both the greatest and purest triumph of modern conservatism because it was pitched as “think of how much money we could pour into healthcare if we didn’t have to give it to the GREEKS” and then when it passed it immediately became “great news lads, we’re cutting healthcare”

CEO: We need to cut costs. Accountant: We pay you $50 million annually. You are being paid $1 million for this meeting. CEO: Who's that in the hallway? Accountant: That's Greg. He is the only thing keeping this company together. We pay him in nickels and Grubhub gift cards. CEO: Fire Greg.

If capitalism worked as advertised, this saga should (at the very least) make some c-suite people bonus-less this year. I'm not holding my breath.

The "woke mind virus" these freaks keep shrieking about isn't some nefarious program or even anything nominally moral or ethical, it's literally just giant media companies thinking "hey, maybe we could sell this stuff to more kinds of people" and by george it works

The King of England lies dying and one of his sons has been exiled. A princess has vanished. Plague stalks the land and the Treasury has been plundered. NOW is the time for strange women lying in ponds to distribute swords to form the basis of government.

Alrighty, fuck it, let's go. Here's an inexhaustive list of non-Western countries that Trump's policies would absolutely make infinitely worse to live in: -Ukraine (he would sell it to Russia) -Iran (he would probably nuke it) -Palestine (he would be worse) -The Baltics (see Ukraine entry)
Good lord this shit is so stupid

Centrism is so fascinating to me because it's based on a correct premise — rigid ideologies can lead people to misunderstand facts and reach incorrect conclusions. But "the truth lies equidistant between left & right" is itself a rigid ideology! You can't approach every problem with this assumption

It’s only fascism if it’s exactly like 1930s Europe, otherwise it’s just sparkling far right, hyper-nationalist populism that deploys antisemitic & racist propaganda in defense of a nostalgic concept of the traditional patriarchal family supposedly besieged by culturally-foreign & degenerate others.

I mean, I try not to be judgmental but … ok. Fine. I don’t try. I’m very judgmental. And my judgment is that if your chief anxiety about AI is that a robot may tell you not to use the n-word, you’re a gigantic fucking loser.

People keep encountering a very easy version of the trolley problem and picking a non-existent third choice and then watching the maximum number people get run over and pretending they didn’t have a choice
Can you point to a historical example when people refused to make that choice and then they achieved what they sought to achieve?
