No other nation has ever prosecuted a former leader, except for about half of them, so you can see why this is so outrageous.

(looking through list of countries) "Italy, France, Portugal, Scotland, Israel, South Korea...." Wow, look at all these banana republics!

Depends if you light it on fire.

Grammatically wrong but right in every other aspect.

This sounds like an extravagant dessert, somehow. Perhaps a flambé.

Also, the US has been perfectly willing to try, convict, and even imprison elected officials at lower levels of government: mayors (Kwame Kilpatrick, Bill Campbell), governors (Rod Blagojevich, Jim Guy Tucker), senators, etc. I didn’t hear Republicans complaining when it was Democrats in the dock.
Avatar
Yeah, they just brush right past that.

Federal prison, aka the New Jersey’s elected officials retirement plan.

It's mandatory here in ecuador.
Avatar
Were you ever really president of Ecuador if you never been to prison since?
Connecticut, New York, Illinois, ...

In all fairness, Portugal and South Korea were military dictatorships until pretty recently, and Italy had their OWN Donald Trump who largely escaped justice

Also this guy who {checks notes} is out of jail and back in power

Excuse me Mr Kruse. Scotland isn’t a republic. We prefer the term, Fruit Salad Monarchy.

Prosecuting corrupt former presidents is practically a South Korean national pastime
Avatar
Pfft. Those places don’t have the Banana Republicans like we do.

Vatican City even did it with the former leader’s corpse.

You know they’d be calling it a Banana Republic if Biden got convicted of a crime too…

“It’s a tribute to America’s greatness that no man is above the law”

“It was with a heavy respect for the institution of law that we convicted Joe Biden for jaywalking.”
Avatar
Look man, the Constitution says "high crimes and misdemeanors". Trump was completely sober when he committed his felonies. Jaywalking is a misdemeanor offense. Biden's got to go. Blame the Founding Fathers.

Avatar
Biden could do the funniest thing ever and use his presumed total immunity to sell Trump a Presidential Pardon for a billion dollars.

exceptionalists having a rough one

Even we’ve done two VPs and a bunch of different governors and congresspeople (including Speaker) and judges and cabinet secretaries, it’s just this one specific office.
Avatar
I'm told that number would be lower if those former leaders hadn't crimed so much.
I think some would be surprised how many former governors of a US state have been imprisoned by that state.
Avatar
Are we including Illinois? Because that just makes it too easy.
Avatar
But it's good to cherish our bipartisan tradition of selling things you aren't supposed to.
Avatar
okay Jon Chait let’s get you back to your room
Avatar
Start prosecuting former leaders and pretty soon you have universal health insurance, where does it end
Avatar
Including some healthy democracies.

I’m sure he was good friends with Ceaușescu

Oliver Cromwell: Why does he need to be former?
Avatar
look here. Justice is for other countries. Former US presidents are smol bean birthday boys.
Avatar
Guillotines famously never used on leaders.

France locked Sarkozy up.

Inspiration of the song Rascal King, James Michael Curley, a former 4 term mayor of Boston, comes to mind. Not a national leader, but elite when it comes to crime.
