On Independence Day, note our progress towards energy independence & a sustainable future for generations ahead. Thanks to 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure & 2022 Inflation Reduction laws, U.S. companies are accelerating in grid batteries to make solar+wind scalable. That's not all...

Imagine for one second if the NYT marshaled its massive influence towards voter registration, towards supporting voting rights groups, towards encouraging people to vote and fighting people who try to stop people from voting. Imagine if the NYT actually championed participatory democracy.

Yep. One of the biggest blind spots people have is assuming that underneath, others share the same basic values as them. They have trouble imagining an ideology that is completely misaligned with theirs.

One thing I think people forget is how relentlessly *stupid* every day of the Trump administration was. He doesn’t need to do a big elaborate complicated conspiracy, he can just (e.g.) email a list of every U.S. agent in the field to Putin and say it’s to own the libs, and *that* will have immunity.

When we look back, today will feel more consequential than J6. Might not lend itself to dramatic footage, but it’s certainly been effective. Decades and billions led up to this day. I remember my mom talking about the John Birchers 50 years ago

very much reflective of the lack of any real survival instinct among journalists that they think the big story today is whether biden will step down
“What makes you so confident you should be president?” is an actual question a reporter shouted at the incumbent who just warned about a reckless court decision that imperils democracy

Biggest campaign story ever: using a private email server that could hold top secrets but doesn’t and could be breached but wasn’t. Tiny story: stealing top secrets. Hiding them in a bathroom. Taking them to NJ. Showing them to foreigners. Meeting with foreign governments.

On the eve of Independence Day, the Supreme Court rules the Revolution was wrong.
Avatar
The thing I can't stop thinking about is this: I'm 48, and in my adult lifetime there has been one Republican who won the popular vote. But I will probably spend the rest of my life under the authority of a Supreme Court dominated by hard right conservatives. How is that democracy?
Avatar
“The Court’s conservative majority has revealed itself to be the most direct threat to American democracy, and any Democrat who is not ready to shelve old fears about ‘court packing’ and get serious about expanding and reforming the Court isn’t made for this moment.” Correct.
Avatar
There is no question the Supreme Court must be expanded if we are to save democracy. Dem members of Congress who believe that should go to the president, tell him they will fight for him, particularly as there are calls for him to leave the race, and that he must expand court.

it is worth remembering that authoritarian regimes do not have infinite resources for hunting people down
Ppl need to remember that even totalitarian regimes have limited prosecutorial resources. China spends a gargantuan amount of money on internal security and it was only able to arrest a small portion of the COVID lockdown protesters who challenged its authority a little while ago.

The number one thing we should still be discussing from the debate is that Trump refused to rule out another January 6 attack.

Kamala Harris isn't some perfect solution to all that ails the Democratic party. But she is basically the only other plausible option, and insisting that a white or male figure untested on the national stage is somehow a safer option is telling on your own racial and gender attitudes.
i cannot get over the basic incoherence of “harris dropped out before voting in 2020 therefore she is definitely unelectable” and then in the same breath saying “this governor who has never run a national campaign would be guaranteed to be more successful”

john yoo understood better than most that even a frivolous constitutional argument is all the permission the right needs to pursue its autocratic ambitions and the legal establishment still hasn't come up with a good response
just finished gary wills’ “Bomb Power” and the chapters on the dubya administration are a good reminder of a) the horror show of those years and b) the remarkable fact that in an administration of degenerates, john yoo stands apart as the absolute worst

Activists unfurled an image of Putin above a stage where Farage was speaking. The image was captioned 'I ❤️ Nigel' and organisers appeared to struggle to remove it, forcing audience members to start a chant of 'rip it down, rip it down'.
Farage and the Putin banneryoutu.be 🚨We just dropped in on Farage’s election rally with a beaming picture of Putin. Nigel was not pleased.

I feel like this should go without saying but the only sane & responsible vote is November is the one that prevents Trump from taking office & finishing off American democracy. Unless something extremely surprising happens, that choice will be Joe Biden. And in any event it will be the D nominee.
Avatar
Don't fall for the trap. If Democrats listen to the New York Times and try to replace Biden, the New York Times will have a new narrative: Democrats in chaos. And they will then have 347 stories a week about whoever is the candidate, all focused on how inexperienced and unprepared that person is.
Avatar
Perhaps there is no full-page editorial freakout demanding Trump drop out of the race because the hereditary failson publisher of the New York Times A. G. Sulzberger has solidarity with local hereditary failson Trump? Both have done a spectacularly lousy job of managing their daddies' businesses.
Avatar
A POV that doesn't seem out there is there are huge parts of the Dem base that aren't likely to take kindly with Dem elites taking away their candidate after they made their choice. SC had a primary, and Biden got 95% of the vote.
Unlike many others On Here, I don't think there's a way for Biden to bow out without it leading to extreme risks of a very different kind. We need more of an acknowledgment from the replace-Biden camp that this is not a remotely easy dilemma. newrepublic.com/article/1832...

We’re in the middle of an election cycle where one candidate is a criminal authoritarian running on a platform of bloody revenge against Democrats and the only time in the entire campaign you’ve seen a bit of sincere emotion from the Dem insider class is a panic attack over their own guy.

Biden: "How many billions of dollars do you owe in civil penalties for molesting a woman in public, for having sex with a porn star while your wife was pregnant? You have the morals of an alley cat." I think Biden went too far here. Alley cats don’t deserve such abuse.

Also a guy who has done more unions including the UAW than any president since FDR v. a scab who would destroy the right to organize
Great piece on EV complexities from @citizencohn.bsky.social. This is why I say November just comes down to this: A candidate who has done more than any other president to fight climate change v. a guy who will do everything he can to make climate change worse.
The Biden-Trump Fight That No One Is Talking Aboutwww.huffpost.com The argument is about a lot more than Detroit and cars.
